As a result of the sharp increase in the price of energy during the 1970s and the associated changes in the relative costs of alternative energy resources, all countries need to conserve energy and to replace expensive sources of energy with cheaper ones. The subject of energy efficiency improvement has, therefore, assumed increasing importance worldwide.

Iron and steel production consumes enormous quantities of energy, especially in developing countries where outdated, inefficient technologies are still used to produce iron and steel. Carbon dioxide emissions from steel production, which range between 5 and 15% of total country emissions in key developing countries (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa), will continue to grow as these countries develop and as demand for steel products such as materials, automobiles, and appliances increases.

The steel industry actively manages the use of energy. Energy conservation in steelmaking is crucial to ensure the competitiveness of the industry and to minimise environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Steel saves energy over its many life cycles through its 100% recyclability, durability and lightweight potential. Improvements in energy efficiency have led to reductions of about 60% in energy required to produce a tonne of crude steel since 1960, as demonstrated in Figure .
