It is well suited to a broad readership, ranging from beginning university students to lifelong learners who are interested in how the Earth's past will influence their own future. It also provides simplified explanations of controversial topics, such as energy return on energy investment, peak oil, and fracking.

A unique overview of energy sustainability, this book is built around the theme that all renewable and nonrenewable energy systems ultimately depend on Earth's finite geologic resources. Our energy use and its consequences (including climate change) motivate some of the most contentious and complex public debates of our time. Although these issues are often cast in terms of renewable versus nonrenewable energy, in reality both depend on finite Earth resources. The evolution of the Earth itself therefore offers a uniquely illuminating perspective from which to evaluate alternative pathways toward energy and environmental sustainability. Geofuels: Energy and the Earth systematically develops this perspective using informal, nontechnical language laced with humor. It is well suited to a broad readership, ranging from beginning university students to lifelong learners who are interested in how the Earth's past will influence their own future. It also provides simplified explanations of controversial topics, such as energy return on energy investment, peak oil, and fracking. The focus throughout is on building a sound physical understanding of how natural resources constrain our use of energy.

The advancement of human civilization for the past several millennia has fundamentally been driven by energy exploitation. Think thousands of Egyptians pulling ropes, water wheels turning grain mills, coal driving the industrial revolution, or solar cells recharging plugin cars. With this vision in mind it seems almost crazy to think that we aren't required to learn more about where our energy comes from or the ramifications of its use. Turns out that book didn't exist until now. Alan has been able to capture this subject in a realatively brief, humorous, fair, and informative text. This should be required reading for all of us right next to Hamlet, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Huckleberry Finn. Do yourself a favor and turn off the news pundits who have an agenda to spin and read this book to hear the full story behind the subject that drives our economy and civilization. Remember, everything you touch has exploited several sources of energy to get to you. Do you know what there are?

Geofuels is a remarkable book on many levels -- well grounded in sound, documented science; wide perspectives including geological (the author's area of expertise), environmental, economic, and political, along with discussion of social and cultural implications, which cannot be ignored. The scholarship is tempered with a whimsical humor that pops up on virtually every other page.

Product arrived earlier than expected. I give this experience 5 stars. Excellent.

Excellent book to get the big picture view on our energy sources and chellenges going forward.

Geofuels is the first book that I have read cover-to-cover for a class. It was by far the most helpful reading material that I have encountered in my career as an undergrad. Usually, the processes and details related to energy are complicated and hard to understand but Professor Carroll does a spectacular job simplifying these ideas and making them comprehensible. His sense of humor, great analogies, and stories make you want to keep reading. Also, his use of diagrams, pictures, and graphs are great additions to the text. Geofuels is an easy page turner due to Carroll's writing style and makes learning fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in science and the future of energy.

I took a class with Professor Carroll called "Energy Resources" where he gave us PDF versions of his book (the book was still in the editing process) to read for class. This book is very informative, entertaining, and written in a very understandable way for non geology/science majors. After reading a few chapters I told my parents that they should read this book, that it is written in a way that they will understand the concepts Alan is trying to get across. I would highly recommend this book, Alan is very knowledgable and has been working and researching in the oil and gas industry for a long time.

This book provides a concise and comprehensive explanation of the modes of energy and their environmental and economic implications. A great resource for anyone interested in learning about how energy is generated, its renewability, the trade-offs between different sources and how it fits within our planetary system. Written with extensive knowledge of the physical sciences and bringing in aspects of energy policy, energy markets and development. There are no easy solutions to our energy/carbon dilemma but the best ones will be based on sound facts, this is a great and informative read.
