The Course of Theoretical Physics is a ten-volume series of books covering theoretical physics that was initiated by Lev Landau and written in collaboration with his student Evgeny Lifshitz starting in the late 1930s. It is said that Landau composed much of the series in his head while in an NKVD prison in 1938-1939. However, almost all of the actual writing of the early volumes was done by Lifshitz, giving rise to the witticism, "not a word of Landau and not a thought of Lifshitz".

This is a very good book on non-relativistic quantum mechanics by an acknowledged master of theoretical physics. Almost every sentence is meaningful and well thought out. However this book is not meant for a novice who wishes to study the subject for the first time. Landau's unique perspectives on this subject (as well as others in his famous Course of Theoretical Physics) is best appreciated by physicists who are well versed in their disciplines. The reader should also be aware that recent developments such as quantum entanglement and quantum computation are not in the book.

ATTENTION: The five star rating applies only to the textbook and the author, NOT to the publisher.
It's really embarrassing that such a nice textbook is published and printed in extremely bad quality. I bought this book three years ago, despite my greed to read it, I never managed to, because of the extremely bad typesetting and using incredibly small font size by the publisher. The equations are hardly readable.
This is really a big shame to the publisher. Poor Landau would be shaken in grave if he knew how bad his textbooks were published under his name.
I am already looking for another (perhaps older) version of this book that could be at least readable.
A question to the publisher: Seriously, I wonder if you ever had a look at the text inside this book to see what you did with printing? Did you ever think how the poor reader of the book would manage reading 700 pages of tiny letters and symbols, or you were just thinking of the money you could get out of his pocket?

This masterpiece in physics is a classic that needs not introduction. Just be warned: if you are not a student without means, this book is not for you. I can't conceive how, in this age where LaTeX is widespread, such an edition could come to being. The formulae are pathetically written, the fonts are often blurry, the edition is plain cheap. I'm handing one of the volumes in my hand now: printed and bound in China... the bad way. It's better to photocopy the good editions and bind it yourself, really.

I guess I would had loved these volumes when I was a pennyless student, long ago. Now all I see is a mutilation of a classic. Believe me, it can be done both cheap and well. This masterpiece _deserves_ it; anything else is sacrilege.

The book is an excellent reference for graduate students and show the mastery of Lev Landau (Noble laureate in Physics). It is a very good way to learn quantum mechanics. The only down side is that it is not very explanatory.

This is a wonderful book - a classic (as indeed is the whole L+L series). This is the third English edition - translated from the fourth Russian edition. But beware: the English translation of the third Russian edition is also labeled as the third English edition. Strange!! Admittedly there is not much change - apart from the addition of some very interesting new Problems.

My one gripe is that the printing and the binding of these newer editions is so poor. I would love to have well-bound hardback versions, properly printed on quality paper. Dream on. . . .

Wow, Landaus' book is just amazing. A great read. His whole series is just fabulous. I have read most of his books and have to admit that Russian physics is well outstanding because of this.

I haven't read this book yet, but I have already noticed the print quality is as bad as some reviewers have said. Some of the type is extremely small and hard to read with the poor printing quality. For the most part, it's readable, but I would rather have an old used copy than the new cheap-o version. Unfortunately, it seems anyone who has an old copy doesn't want to part with it.

I have received a 2005 printing of this, and the print quality is terrible, often unreadable in complex mathematical expressions. I purchased some other books in this series about 10 years ago, and their print quality was fine. So my advice is not to buy without being able to check the print quality first.
