Admirably, the book seems to cover all of the major electro-optic topics: LEDs, fiber optics, solar cells, lasers.

I completed a semester course with this book and found this book very poorly written and organized. The professor was very good and did the best he could. I believe the book, as bad as it is, was the best book available. But, again, this book is very flawed.

First, the book presumes the read has more than a passing familiarity with quantum mechanics. I didn't. My school did not require quantum mechanics as a pre-req. Maybe my school is to blame, but I don't think so.

Second, it was absolutely maddening the way material was consistently presented in the book. It seemed like every subject was presented as follows: broad discussion of the topic and then sample problems in which new equations or new variables are introduced for the first time. I can't understand why it would make sense to the author to introduce a new concept or equation in a sample problem. Initially, I would study a section and attempt to do a sample problem before looking at the solution (as I attempt to do in every course). I quickly learned this was not possible with this book. So the usefulness of sample problems, an extremely valuable study tool, was negated.

Third, the book "sloppily" uses terminology and symbols. Some symbols are used for more than one variable. Some variables are referred to by different names (even slight differences in names is problematic). Subscripts are present without explanation.

Fourth, the index was utterly deficient. Every topic raised in the book should have been listed in the index.

I've tried to be objective in this review. I could feel frustration building up as I wrote this review. I've heard the second revision is out, but haven't seen it. Hopefully it is much better than this version.

Bought it for my Intro to Optoelectronics course, really helpful. Have a CD-rom as it has claimed. However, maybe because it’s an old edition, can’t find problem sets given by our teacher.

This is an introductory text, and not at the same level as Yariv's books or Rosencher's Optoelectronics or Chuang's Physics of Optolelectronic Devices, etc. However, holding this book will not break your wrist (like Saleh and Teich's Photonics, another good introductory text) and is on a similar level to Saleh, but not as exhaustive. The figures, illustrations and examples are well done and are numerous. Good as a first exposure to a topic. Contents:
