A comparative introduction to major global wireless standards, technologies and their applications From GSM to LTE-Advanced .

Excellent and comprehensive book for mobile networks from GSM to LTE.

His interests are focused on mobile communication networks, multimedia applications and especially the wireless Internet.

For that, I found "4G: LTE/LTE-Advanced for Mobile Broadband" to be a great companion

For that, I found "4G: LTE/LTE-Advanced for Mobile Broadband" to be a great companion. On the upside, the book also covers WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which is a great plus, as it puts all of the technologies in the same context. If you need a primer on pre-4G wireless networking, then this is a great read and reference. One person found this helpful.

A comparative introduction to major global wireless standards, technologies and their applications. Most innovations in recent years have focused on LongTerm Evolution (LTE).

This book contains not only a technical description of the different wireless systems.

In this flood of technology, From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband enables readers to examine and understand each technology, and how to utilise several different systems for the best results.

In this way, the advantages and also limitations of each technology become apparent. Mobile telephony - Mobile phone tower Mobile telephony is the provision of telephone services to phones which may move around freely rather than stay fixed in one location.

Wireless systems such as GSM, UMTS, LTE, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth offer possibilities to keep people connected while on the move.

A new edition of Wiley's Communication Systems for the Mobile Information Society, from the same author

Wireless systems such as GSM, UMTS, LTE, WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth offer possibilities to keep people connected while on the move. In this flood of technology, From GSM to LTE: An Introduction to Mobile Networks and Mobile Broadband enables readers to examine and understand each technology, and how to utilise several different systems for the best results. This book contains not only a technical description of the different wireless systems available today, but also explains the rationale behind the different mechanisms and implementations; not only the 'how' but also the 'why' is focused on. Thus the advantages and also limitations of each technology become apparent.

Offering a solid introduction to major global wireless standards and comparisons of the different wireless technologies and their applications, this new edition has been updated to provide the latest directions and activities in 3GPP standardization reaching up to Release 10, and importantly includes a new chapter on LTE. The new LTE chapter covers aspects such as Mobility Management and Power Optimization, Voice over LTE, and Air Interface and Radio Network.

Provides readers with an introduction to major global wireless standards and compares the different wireless technologies and their applications The performance and capacity of each system in practice is analyzed and explained, accompanied with practical tips on how to discover the functionality of different networks Offers approximately 25% new material, which includes a major new chapter on LTE and updates to the existing material including Release 4 BICN in relation to GSM Questions at the end of each chapter and answers on the accompanying website (http://www.wirelessmoves.com) make this book ideal for self study or as course material

The book delivers as promised. Understanding the history, and motivation of all of the wireless technologies (AMPS, GSM, CDMA2000, etc) provides the much needed context to better understand where we are headed with LTE, and why. The book provides enough technical details to understand each one, but without overwhelming you with too much numbing, technical details.

The coverage of LTE is sparse, and there is no discussion on LTE-Advanced.

This pretty much what I wanted as a reference on the technical aspects of the newer wireless standards. I would have given it five stars except that it is a bit too technical for some readers. I very much liked the book overall and will use it for reference and as a source of information for developing course material for training military students. I would buy it again.

This book provides many background and design concepts of the mobile communication system. It explains how a technical decision was made and why the real world adopted it or abandoned it.

It is overall and introductory instead of being detailed. If you have studied many 3GPP specification and want to have a big view on the system, this is the book you would like to read.

As the author indicates at the beginning of the book, "From GSM to LTE" provides a comprehensive overview of this evolution of modern wireless technologies, in a single concise but comprehensive format accessible to anyone with a prior background in communications theory. It is a plus that the author avoids the mathematics behind these standards, instead focusing on the "how and why" of all the technical components of GSM, GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/UMTS, and LTE, without going into the mind-numbing detail of the actual technical standards, which are nonetheless cited for those who wish to refer to them to actually implement these technologies. The book also has chapters on IEEE 802.16 (WiMax), IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n (WLAN), and Bluetooth, but I have not yet read them.

It is really useful for entry level telecommunication engineer .,, easy to follow, must get book & good for your reference

I think the author's goal is noble, but this book assumes you have a some background in telecommunications. I have a degree in aerospace and electrical engineering, and still couldn't grasp the key concepts even in the first chapter. The book is written in a way that feels like it's just a compilation of notes that the author has taken while doing the research but does not elaborate or interpret the information in a meaningful way. A lot of what but not enough why - a lot of presumption that you know the context and background. Take OSI layers as an example.. Would have been nice to do a primer on that before trying to draw GSM analogies.

The book could benefit a lot from diagrams, but the diagrams are few and far between and full of acronyms that you'd have to track down in the text from couple of pages back. There are so many diagrams that are nothing but acronyms and icons that are not even defined.

Really wished the sample text of this book had actual content and not just table of figures, otherwise I would have not purchased this.

My initial impressions of the book are quite good. In fact, it is one of the few books that clearly apply analogies from the TCP/IP world to make things like the role of various nodes in the GSM network as well as the role various protocols (and there are way too many of them) play in the network. This makes it easier for readers from the TCP/IP background to understand and absorb concepts thoroughly. This is lacking in the many official and unofficial guides out there on the internet

I love this book for its depth into the inner workings of the prevalent telecommunications systems. I'm currently studying in a Masters program and need to know how this technology works from the ground up. The book goes into great detail for those who have an idea of how it works already(I've read GSM and UMTS, not at LTE yet). There is a slight learning curve, so consider something more entry level if you are coming in with no prior understanding of the system.
