The Catholic Church in China has a long and complicated history. Christianity has existed in China in various forms since at least the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century AD. Following the 1949 takeover by the Communist Party of China, Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant missionaries were expelled from the country, and the religion was vilified as a manifestation of western imperialism

In Forces for Change in Contemporary China, twenty-nine leading Chinese studies specialists address the central dilemma facing the People's Republic of China-the need for change and the threat such change poses to mainland China's existing institutional power arrangements.

The Catholic Church claims Jesus Christ himself as her founder, and in spite of heresy from within and hostility from without, she remains in the twenty-first century the steadfast guardian of belief in his life, death, and resurrection

The Catholic Church claims Jesus Christ himself as her founder, and in spite of heresy from within and hostility from without, she remains in the twenty-first century the steadfast guardian of belief in his life, death, and resurrection. The history of the Catholic Church is long, complicated, and fascinating, and in this book it is expertly and ably told by historian James Hitchcock.

This is a first class, readable, in-depth account of the persecution of the Catholic Church in China from 1947 to the early 1980s.

To write out the narrative, Professor Myers drew on Chairman Mao's writings, Party documents, Chinese newspapers, reports by missionaries, and accounts by Catholics who fled China. He notes that the new Communist government replicated the methods used by the Soviet Union in the 1920s to eliminate religion. Chinese Catholics were able to resist the Party's efforts for many years before succumbing to the successive persecutions of the revolution, the Korean War campaigns against imperialism, the anti-Rightist campaign, the crackdown after the Hundred Flowers movement, and finally the Cultural Revolution.

At the end of the Cultural Revolution and the arrest of the Gang of Four, small remnants of Catholics surfaced, and other Catholics who spent years in prisons and labor camps were released. They were divided, however, by their experiences. Professor Myers notes that the Chinese government and Communist Party were unable to eliminate Catholicism, but they succeeded in dividing it. Decades later, the fault lines between "patriotic" and "underground" Catholics remain.

At the end of each chapter, Professor Myers reprints illustrative primary source documents. Don't fail to read the speech given by Father John Tung on June 2, 1951. He was never heard from again.

Those who want to learn more about this topic will want to read Paul Mariani's new book, "Church Militant," which complements Professor Myers' earlier volume. Mariani had access to internal Party documents that describe how the campaign of persecution was executed. These were unavailable to Myers.

This book, with its eye witness accounts, paints a vivid portrait of the persecution and executions of Catholic Christians under Communist China. It fills in the gaps that "official" records omit.
