Richard Foster awakens us to God’s continued desire to commune with us despite the deafness of our sin-blunted ears. From long experience, he shows how the dynamic use of the spiritual disciplines can open our ears to God’s voice. A book to read slowly.

Richard Foster awakens us to God’s continued desire to commune with us despite the deafness of our sin-blunted ears. Alluring warmth, empathetic breadth, and twenty-twenty perceptiveness, mild on sin but firm on grace, have together become the hallmark of the Renovare books. This pathway into the with-God life is a worthy addition to the study.

In this book, Foster tries to tie together his various writings and ideas about spiritual growth and present a way of living a life with God. Because he tries to cover so much, he can't treat any ideas in depth, and that is the only real weakness in the book. You can still find everything we expect from Foster: enormous, deep learning in the spiritual classics; a profound spiritual life that he writes about eloquently; and a knack for picking stories out of the lives of Christians from the past to illustrate his points. If you are a Foster fan, you won't be disappointed, even if you.

book by Richard J. This book had been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years before I started into it. It's one of the better, deeper books I have read recently. Those men are the modern day Apostles in the Evangelical world.

Richard J. Foster finally does his book on the Bible! Foster's Celebration of Discipline has sold over a million copies, shows the intimate connection between Scripture and spirituality, revealing the secrets to living the 'with-God life.'

Richard Foster has provided us with yet another treasure. I found this book an encouraging guide to the reading of the Scriptures. Foster invites his readers to enter the world of the Bible and find a God who is intimately and personally involved with his creation. This God has invited us into relationship, and Foster directs his reader how they might be transformed by this relationship through the reading of the Bible. A common refrain in Foster's account is that God is continually found in the Scriptures as being with his people, yet God asks us, "Are you with me?" God is present with us. Foster challenges us to learn how to pay attention.

The book includes instruction on how to read the Bible with the heart, the mind, and within the context of the community. Foster, drawing from the work of Dallas Willard, wants to encourage his readers to take up the reading of the Bible in a way that one's character is transformed. He believes that the Bible, by God's grace, can help us to be disciplined people who "do the right thing at the right time for the right reason." Foster's final section instructs the reader on how they might be disciplined in relationships, discover freedom in Christ, and walk by God's grace.

This book is a good read with a number of examples drawn from Foster's experience and his extensive readings from classic devotional works. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to further refine their approach to reading the Bible.

A book by Richard Foster of "Celebration of the Disciplines" fame. This book is Foster's take on Dallas Willard's understanding of the general pattern of human transformation as expressed in the acronym VIM; Vision, Intention and Means. The penultimate chapter "The Way of Freedom" saved this book of me. As Foster remarks, "Two utterly unquestioned values in our culture today are desire and freedom --to put it bluntly, "I do what I want, when I want, to the extent that I want. The cultural idol of the self has distorted our understanding of freedom in Christ...But on the other side of license lies moralism." In the present cultural climate the spiritual disciplines remain the largely unrealized and untried means to the kind of life that God offers all.

Used as a devotional for a ministry in which I was involved. Helped to come to a deeper sense of community.

This book begins with an overview and explanation of the Bible, moves into traditions among the faithful and then digs deeper and deeper into spiritual disciplines - more so than I've read in any other book I've already given the book as a gift and will be doing that again at Christmas.

Great book. Pretty easy reading, stops and makes you think about is this what God really wants from us.

Pryl
If anyone wants some good input on the topic of prayer, this is a great book to read.

Foster shows you in simple, easy to understand language what Life With God should look like. This book would be a great opportunity for Christians to transform their lives. Foster has figured it out for us.
