I loved this book! David Robbins is an exceptionally skilled storyteller. And, THUNDER VALLEY is his best western to date. It's a fast moving story with loads of action. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Great characters , especially Rondo James. James is a fascinating gunfighter. An honorable man who just wants to be left alone, yet is a magnet for trouble. He also has a unique way of dispatching his enemies. There's not much more I can add that wasn't already covered by the previous reviewer. All I can say is if you love wild westerns and gunfights, then buy this book!

David Robbins writes great Westerns. His novels draw you in with vivid characterizations and superb storytelling.
His recent BLOOD FEUD, about two hill clans killing each other off ala the Hatfields and McCoys, was riveting. Here he's done it again by doing what he usually does; taking an ordinary plot, turning it on its head, and making it new and enthralling with twists and turns you don't see coming. In this instance it's a land grab by a big, bad railroad that threatens to destroy whole families. Only one of those families happens to have befriended a wandering gun hand by the name of Rondo James. Crisp prose, crackling dialogue, and outstanding action scenes make for a novel you won't want to put down until you've finished it, which is as high a compliment as a novel can earn.

There are some that say that the American Western is a dying genre. Apparently, no one has ever bothered to tell David Robbins that. Robbins crafts a tale so expertly that the reader is drawn into it without realizing it. From the characters to the setting to the plot, he takes what could have been just another forgettable Western story and makes it memorable.

Rondo James, a notorious ex-Confederate solider turned gunslinger, rides into Thunder Valley and right into a mess of trouble. It seems the Wyoming Overland Railroad and its villainous owner, Charlton Rank, wants to buy Thunder Valley so he can put a new rail line through it. Unfortunately, Thunder Valley's residents are not inclined to move. As a result, Rank hires a quartet of gunmen to change their minds. Rondo is the type that doesn't take too kindly to bullies, especially those that menace someone that he has befriended. Out of that, a battle ensues.

Rondo is one of the most memorable Western characters to show up in fiction in a long time. He's not the typical good guy, but he isn't the typical anti-hero either. From his white hair to his Confederate coat and hat, Rondo stands out. Personally, I'd love to see Rondo show up in another of Robbins's books.

Thunder Valley is a well-written, perfectly paced example of what someone with talent and a love for the genre can do. The plot never lapsed, the characters never seemed like cardboard cut-outs, and the action was never clichéd.

If you like Thunder Valley as much as I did, then I recommend two other books by David Robbins: A Wolf in the Fold and Blood Feud.

In a day and age when money is tight, David Robbins never disappoints his readers and gives them a lot of bang for their buck.

Direbringer
Rondo James is the kind of western hero you will remember for a long time.

After a deadly show of gun ability Rondo finds himself swept up in the troubles of Thunder Valley. Who is responsible for the slaughter of hogs and then people? And if this isn't enough of a problem there is unknown danger riding for a showdown with Rondo.

Rondo James isn't the only well crafted character within this novel. There are the four hired assassins, the people who live in the valley and the nearby town, the gunmen riding for a reckoning with Rondo, and the elderly lawman who arrives with a warning and will maybe find a new life.

David Robbins gives the reader a fast paced story filled with gunplay, suspense, and more than one twist to the tale as all aren't exactly who they say they are. The story is spiced with moments of humour, mainly presented through dialogue.

Thunder Valley is a very difficult to put down book that thoroughly entertains. It's a book that should be on every western fan's reading list.

Thunder Valley

by David Robbins 2012

Thunder Valley is a desirable place to farm, ranch and raise a family.

And that is just what the folks who live in Thunder Valley do, raise crops and children. It is mostly farms, but there are a couple of ranches as well.

If life were only as simple as folks who make an honest living and go about their lives in an orderly fashion. Instead, it is a world with those who hold power, those who are greedy and others who are downright evil and then, the rest of us.

Thunder Valley is in for something unexpected by the unsuspecting.

Rondo James, a former southern rebel and shootist meets up with a friendly farmer and his family....just when something more powerful and evil than you can imagine is on the horizon.

What a great read this is! I'd recommend it to anybody who loves westerns, lots of action, a great plot with twists in it and memorable characters, especially Rondo James! Entertaining and thought provoking storytelling at its best!

Coidor
A "starter" story by David Robbins. It's a good tale and holds together with interesting characters and a coherent story line. It is not a very complex tale and very predictable from the start. You can tell that this author is cutting his teeth on the skills that he uses later in more elaborate tales. Interesting that a number of authors use the western genre to develop their skills.

Started to read, but not a story type that interests me. I shall not buy any more of this type of yarn.

Excellent Read.
