Browse and save recipes from When You Fast. Recipes For Lenten Seasons to your own online collection at EatYourBooks. This balanced and helpful book was born out of the author's nearly decade-long quest to attain a rule of fasting for her family in accordance with the traditional Eastern Christian discipline. Her goal was not only abstention from meat during lenten seasons, but also abstention from dairy products, and from oils on the strictest of fast days. The resultant 200 recipes provide a variety of easy, nourishing, and appealing meals.

Recipes For Lenten Seasons. Customers who viewed this item also viewed. The recipes in this book are very plain and c in the sense that you might find them as basic stuff in a general cookbook. Was hoping for more personal elements.

I like "When You Fast: Recipes for Lenten Seasons" by Catherine Mandell (she also happens to be Fr. Thomas Hopko's daughter) from SVS Press. This cookbook indicates on all recipes if they are for oil or non-oil days. I highly recommend it. The pharisees would be quite proud or jealous. I saw a miracle where 2 people entered church one by baptism and one by chrismation. On pictures the one received by full baptism was shinning in light the one by chrismation n.

She says Catherine Mandell’s cookbook When You Fast. Recipes for Lenten Seasons is an excellent way to make fasting in community a joyful experience. While fasting is a winding and varied journey, Stone observes, its destination is, across traditions, a greater love of God and neighbors. We miss an opportunity during this penitential season if our Lenten practice only involves subtraction from our lives, Elizabeth Sands Wise writes in Adding In, Not Giving Up (p. 87).

The Catholic Church historically observes the disciplines of fasting and abstinence at various times each year

The Catholic Church historically observes the disciplines of fasting and abstinence at various times each year. For Catholics, fasting is the reduction of one's intake of food, while abstinence refers to refraining from meat (or another type of food). The Catholic Church teaches that all people are obliged by God to perform some penance for their sins, and that these acts of penance are both personal and corporeal. Bodily fasting is meaningless unless it is joined with a spiritual fast from sin.

Catherine Mandell, author of When You Fast: Recipes for Lenten Seasons, a cookbook published by St. Vladimir's Seminary Press (2005), made national news this past weekend. She appeared on the popular PBS program "Religion & Ethics Newsweekly" in a segment titled "Orthodox Lenten Meals," hosted by Bob Abernathy. The cookbook contains 200 recipes for easy, nourishing, and appealing fasting meals; sprinkled among the delicious recipes are sayings from the Mothers and Fathers of the early Church regarding how the body and soul are affected by eating habits.

Confessionals are located at the end of each of the Landings during the Nightmare Stages. Sitting in these is the only way to move forward to the next stage. While some confessional questions are usually awkward or embarrassing, others are very philosophical and contemplative, forcing the player to question their own morals. Every question is subjective and lacking a right/wrong answer.

This is a very informative book, with thought provoking information regarding fasting, overall dietary habits and spiritual condition. I expected only recipes and was pleasantly surprised by the other information provided--I had to read it a few times to fully digest (no pun intended) what was being discussed. Humbled by what I read, I have been trying to modify my approach to eating and beliefs about food and nutrition. As the lenten period approaches (Great Lent in the Orthodox faith), I will be re-reading this book and making the recipes.

This is a must have cookbook for beginners to expert cooks. I just love the recipes in this book. Whether you are cooking for a vegan or you need recipes to prepare meals for Lenten fasts this cookbook will meet your every need. The cookbook is worth every penny you spend, and once you use the recipe for the non-dairy Lenten Chocolate cake you will not be disappointed. The cake is easier to make than any of the out-of-the-box cakes, yet tastes lighter, richer, and fluffier than you can ever imagine and all this without any milk or eggs. This cookbook is great for everyone out their who wants or needs to prepare and eat healthier meals.

An excellent book for anyone interested in cooking healthy and nutricious meals that actually taste good. Whether you are an Orthodox Christian seeking to follow the Church's fasting guidelines, someone who is looking for Vegan recipes, or just someone looking for good tasting meals that are relatively easy to prepare, you will find this book easy to use for anyone with average abilities in the kitchen. Additionally, it provides excellent guidance and wonderful spiritual quotes from the Church Fathers. I ordered and received the book just before the Great Fast and have used it a great deal already. I highly recommended it!

LOVE the recipes in this cookbook. They are mostly vegan main dish. I've made several of the recipes for the church coffee hour and every person who has tried the food has loved it and asked for the reciple. Unfortunately, I lost the cookbook while shopping, and have had to re-purchase. This book has unique blends of spices and ingredients that are very tasty. Not hot spicy, but tasty spicy.

Hard to find out of print book with great recipes and more.

Love this recipe book. Great for vegans. The spiritual aspect of foods.

This Lenten cookbook is excellent for all times of the year as many of the recipes have oil or no oil options. Mostly Orthodox Christians will find this cookbook useful but anyone who is into a vegetarian diet will make good use of this book. This cookbook was quite popular in the parish bookstore I manage so I can attest to its universal appeal. You won't be disappointed in this book.
