This book exceeded my expectations. It opened my eyes to the reason addicts do what they do and how they can be helped. The book explains the science and genetics behind addiction at a level that is easy to understand. It sets the expectation of what is needed for an addict to maintain recovery and minimize a relapse. I recommend this book especially for a spouse or parent of someone suffering from addiction. I also believe this book can help someone who has already detoxed and is starting their recovery. It does not candy-coat what it takes to maintain recovery. It provides realistic time proven facts and recommendations that can guide an addict in the right direction to successfully improve their life!

In dealing with chemical and psychological addiction, there are two processes at play. One is the process of treating the medical condition iself and the other is the much more difficult and longer lasting process of dealing with the issues which may have attributed to the addiction to begin with and dealing with those issues in a constructive and meaningful manner. Dr. Powers has done a fabulous job in eloquently putting these processes under the microscope in a clearly written and easy to understand manner. If you or someone you know is suffering from addiction(s) please consider reading this book from cover to cover. It is informative, comprehensive, and a valuable tool in helping further our understanding and approach to treating the addicted patient safely and effectively.

This is the best book I have read, and I've read many, on the disease of alcoholism and addiction.
I have a recovering son, thanks to the principles of this book being used in the drug rehab where my son was treated, The Right Step in Houston, where the author, Dr. Powers is medical director.
I learned so much about the disease and the human treatment needed to help the addict; the way the addict's brain works, the relapse triggers, the way to intervene to stop this deadly progressive disease, compassion without enabling.
My son relates to all he is learning and finally understanding why he does what he does. He's had many relapses and been in many sober living facilities, but this time and this method is different and is working.
Thank you Dr. Powers for this incredibly well written and informative book.

Excellent to learn about addiction and its treatment. VERY well written and easy to understand by a doctor with years of experience in this field. I have learned so much from it to help me understand my alcoholic family member. I have especially been helped knowing that many symptoms of advanced addiction mimic those of mental illness and can incorrectly be attributed to that.

This is an excellent book. It helps people understand how the disease 'hijacks' the addict's brain. Although AlAnon gives examples to explain the 12 Steps, this book does an even better job explaining the steps. The book also does a good job explaining various treatments and gives hope, which is needed with this awful disease.

Great read for one recovering or professional alike. Dr. Jason Powers approach from so many different angles made the complexities of addiction and it’s treatments so much more to comprehend‼️

The Apotheoses of Lacspor
Excellent book for the addict and those who are not. The book contains just the right amount of medical terminology and data along with real world things that are going on with the addict to hopefully allow everyone understand what is going on. Being an addict myself, this is one of the best and most informative books I have read.
By the way, I am, was a client of The Right Step in Houston, Tx. and Dr. Powers was a life saver and very helpful in my recovery.

A really good book because it talks about the issues that surround addiction in a very clear and engaging form.
