Essential Ayurveda: What. The author states she wanted to write in a basic, simple style for all to understand and gain the overall focus of ayurveda, to begin to listen to your body. There are a few simple recipes to get one started, I have not tried any offered in this book, however many are in other ayurveda books like stewed fruit, chutneys, rice dishes, etc. So if you are looking for an easy light read on ayurveda to begin to understand the science offered at a reasonable price, this book may be for you.

Essential Ayurveda book. I am partially through it and am enjoying it and learning about ayurveda. Jaya Devi gave it to me while I was visiting in Atlanta. Ayurveda is an ancient way of life and deals with wellness of mind, body and spirit.

Ayurveda is perhaps one of the most popular "holistic" health practices in the United States. Based on 5,000 years of practice and observation and popularized in part in the works of Deepak Chopra, "ayurveda" translates into "the science of life" and takes into account the spiritual, mental, and physcial aspects of health. After a brief definition of ayurveda and the basic elements, ESSENTIAL AYURVEDA outlines the practical steps any person can take to become healthier.According to the author, "ayurveda" is a verb. The book is set up with simple suggestions to get readers started on the path to good health. As Shubhra writes, "attack your goal of great health in bite-sized chunks, and you’ll get there without ever overstepping your comfort zone. In concrete terms, to "do" Ayurveda is to make healthy choices in daily life. These choices can be as simple as choosing fresh fruit over a donut, choosing a health magazine over a horror novel, choosing to sleep instead of watching late night television."

This book is a very basic, very essential introduction to Ayurveda. It is very well organised into the different segment of life (foods, exercise, beauty, mental well-being etc), but the style is narative, it takes you along as if on a journey. At one point you will find yourself in an Indian kitchen, smelling the spices and the vegetables, and imagining the colours, sounds and the surroundings of an Indian family eating breakfast. I've implemented almost to the letter and sometimes with scepticism the advice of the author and after 6 weeks, our life (family of 6 with baby and small children) has truly changed and improved in all spheres (physical health, happiness, pleasure in smaller things, less materialistic etc). Now we are ready for more books and research on the subject, the book is a great spring board for it.

While it's a work in process, the process appears to be working, the process being adapting my diet. I haven't really been able to get into the "body typing" elements, but the "you are what you eat" mantra appears to be right on the money.

This book was an enjoyable read and I had it completely read in one afternoon. It is a good overall introduction to most parts of ayurveda.

If you are looking to dive into a more developed understanding, this book may not offer you as much as you desire. It does not provide information from a techincal standpoint, however this appears to not be the goal of the author.

I offer a 4 star rating since I enjoyed the read and the author's style, and the information was well organized.

Just beginning to study Ayurveda and this is my first book on the subject. Prior to ordering this, I had been doing internet searches but always came up short. This book gives good reference and enough information to decide whether or not Ayurveda is for me or not. The recipes I have tried so far are also delicious.

Very helpful!

FRAY
Helps to define Ayurveda as not a religious thing, rather a health philosophy and a manner to learn to "hear" your body talking to you . Gives great guidance on how to live Ayurvedic.

This little book is clear and concise. It is written for the unfamiliar reader and it informs deeply. I am recommending this book to my friends!

I started to looking into Ayurvedic herbs and healing more out of curiosity than anything. And I'm really glad I did. This is the first book I read and it's great. It's simple but the author has a deep and profound way of looking at life and health. I also like how she includes ingredients that you can easily find here in the US in her skin care recipes. I highly recommend this book for everyone to read!
