I've heard of it but not tried it although I must say reducing carbs intake (as the book talks about) does help me but it has not cured me like the book states it will.

Robillard has written a book entitled Heartburn Cured that explains in detail what happens to people who are genetically predisposed to GERD when they eat too many carbohydrates and explains why restricting carbs makes it go away. The book is an excellent primer on gastroentestinal physiology written in simple terms and it should be in the library of every serious low-carber. Anyone with GERD should get a copy immediately.

Five years ago I started having heartburn. Nothing really helped, and a few times it was so bad I had to go the ER for morphine--yes, that's how bad it was. Since then I have been on Prevacid every day, carafate, and other meds. It triggered the onset of adult Asthma and more medicines. GERD, the doctors told me. Stop coffee (one of the few joys in life), wine (another joy), etc. they told me. This is permanant, you will always be on medicine, etc. Forever. I bought into that, especially since my now ex as an RN told me the docs were right. I just didn't buy it, but didn't know what to do.

No matter what I did heartburn was only a meal away. Last Thanksgiving it hit again--for seven weeks. I missed weeks of work, had every test you can imagine, slept sitting up on the sofa, and spent most nights crawling around on my hands and knees in agony. All the doctor could tell me was that my stomach lining was "enflamed" and I had to give up everything (food-wise, coffee, wine, any and all spices, etc.). And the medicines--my god they had me on a counter-full of RXs. When I slowly began eating again (went from Boost shakes to solid foods, it was an English muffin, slice of toast, etc.) CARBS. Yes, they recommended "bland" foods like . . . bread. And the cycle started again.

I had about two months of some discomfort, a little pain, lots of nausea, and then another two days of terrible pain a couple weeks ago. Someone recommended this book. I bought it. Read it in 2 hours (the first 2/3s is a background explanation of his theory, and the last 1/3 is about what to eat, in what portions, and how to regulate your meals vis a vis your symptoms). It is a simply theory: Certain carbs at certain intake levels create a lot of gas that forces acid into the esophagus (one type of pain, typical "heartburn") and other carbs digest in your small intestine and the gasses expand past your stomach sphincter and slosh acid and intestinal waste back into your stomach (another sort of pain, and this keeps your stomach inflamed.)

In this book, the author has you "decompress" from an average of 400 grams of net carbs a day to . . . 25! (When you start becoming aware of carbs and what you eat every day, you will be absolutely shocked.) This is not as hard as it sounds--especially when you have had enough of the pain. I did it. And the author was right. He said it takes a couple days and you will start to feel a lot better. He was right. And it was exactly two days. My symptoms vanished, completely. After a week of feeling great and eating about 25 - 75 grams, I upped it to 100. (Diet essentially beef jerkey, dry roasted peanuts, dried fruits, fish, certain veggies, dried coconut, etc.) Still no problems. I started drinking low-acid coffee. Feel great. I am going to up it 25 grams a week until my body says "Wait a minute, buddy. That's enough." When that happens, I will back down another 25 net carb grams, and live there. This is what the author recommends.

To be clear: the definition of net carbs varies, but this author means Total Carbohydrates, less fiber and sugar (this is how the labels are set up, so it is easy to figure out). These carbs are important because of the gas they create.

BOTTOM LINE: If you suffer from stomach pain, esophageal pain (heartburn), it could be many things. Get checked, completely. If they have ruled out ulcers, cancer, gall bladder, etc., and if they tell you it is GERD, etc., then bet your bottom dollar it is the carbs you are eating, the gas they create, and the back flow of acid it forces into the wrong places (and this is what may have triggered your ulcer, if you have one, in the first place!). It has been about 10 days now, and I feel great. I had a glass of wine and coffee yesterday, together--nothing.

All those weeks and all my doctor had to do was tell me to cut all the carbs and in two days . . . I don't know if he knows about this, but I am going to tell him. Alas . . . heavy meds and tests make more money for the industry.

Dr. Robillard's book changed my life and by following it, I healed what I found out was LPR. I also quickly lost 15 pounds. You kind of have to take out of it what works for you, but overall, it is filled with great information on living in a healthy way and following a basically low-carb diet.

The methods in this book really worked for me. I had never had reflux before I took 2 rounds of antibiotics for bronchitis. Then my cough wouldn't go away and after multiple trips to doctors, I was diagnosed with GERD. My GERD had gotten so bad it was causing asthma, which I had never before had in my life. Then I read this book and radically cut down on grains. It was a miracle. I have been off medication for a year and can lie down flat at night as long as I control my diet according to the principles the author lays out. GERD may not be the same disease for everyone, but if you have what I have and what the author is targeting then this should work for you.

I tried what this book said and my heartburn is gone overnight! Run! Don't walk to purchase this book. It will solve your heartburn asap and you will be so glad. I drink coffee morning, noon and night. It does not give me heartburn. It is the carbs and sugar. I had abdominal pain like an ulcer and juiced cabbage and it worked like a charm. Secondarily, I got this book and I have cured the heartburn overnight! Good luck to you!

This book really delivers. I have always had a sensitive stomach and this evolved into reflux as I got older. I'm only in my late 20s and I was taking acid reducers (like Pepcid, Omeprazole, etc.) every day. I was getting very nervous as the pills were working less and less, and nothing else I was trying helped. I might also mention that because of taking acid reducers, I managed to get bad bacteria in places I should not have and was diagnosed with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). After being desperate for months and feeling awful everyday, I searched the internet for the hundredth time to find a cure, and this time, this book popped up. I got nervous when after two days I was still having heartburn, but after four days - no more heartburn! It goes just like the book says. You can indulge in some higher amounts of carbs here and there, but you'll likely get heartburn. No worries, just get back on the low carb wagon and you're all set. Incidentally, I've lost some weight and my low carb meals keep me full much longer. I am so thankful for this book. I highly recommend it.

**Update: 9/24/12 - Unfortunately, the low carb way hasn't been helping these days. Based on a lot of research, some folks get complete relief with low carb, and others even get worse. I've become one of the latter, so just a warning, your mileage may vary.
