I bought this book for my mom who was recently diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus but it's too general and doesn't provide a day to day outlook on how to handle yourself in terms of diet, nutrition, normal blood sugar numbers, etc. I ended up borrowing books from the library which was more informative with better selection. Every part of the book says, ask your doctor. Duh! The reason we bought the book is because a lot of people don't have insurance or have high deductible insurance and they can't afford to go to an endocronologist or a nutritionist or have someone monitor them 24-7.

As a newly diagnosed diabetic I was overwhelmed both emotionally and by all the information out there. I looked at vetted websites, talked to my medical group and went to the local library. By far the most readable and easiest to use reference book was Diabetes Mellitus! My husband also found it invaluable. For example, what is a protein and how many grams should I have for dinner. It was easy to locate the food breakdowns and using the menu guides we could create a meal plan. We liked it so much we bought the latest edition and have found it is the only reference guide we need.

My husband struggled with many health issues . Often he referred to this book . It helped him manage his diabetes better . The part on how to eat and manage when ill is very good.

This is a good book on DM. There is a lot of info presented in an informative way. I like it.

Diabetes Mellitus: A Practical Handbook is an excellent book. I would highly recommend it for newly diagnosed diabetes patients as well as diabetics who are "old timers" at this disease. The food exchange lists are simply fantastic as they are divided into "lean meat" with serving portions, "medium fat exchange", and "high-fat meat" with serving portion sizes. The vegetable choices, fruit choices, bread/starch choices. All of this makes life a little more easier when you are suddenly faced with a new way of eating. The sample meal plans are wonderful too. This book should be on the reference list of all physicians who have or will have diabetic patients. The book is written in a clear and easy format and it is simple to understand. I would also recommend it for the younger adolescent diabetic.

I have the eighth edition (2003) and was disappointed to read it. Whole sections could have been lifted straight from the 1970s. For example, there is a chapter on urine testing and only two paragraphs on insulin pumps. It even has a section on visual bG strips! I must have turned back to the copyright page six times to make sure it really said 2003. There's no discussion of the latest research (and we're talking 1990s here) that contradicts some of the practices that are still in this book. Much of the information in this book only applies to Type 2s, but is not marked as such. Not very useful for Type 1s, especially ones that (gasp!) eat sugar.

Although I am a physician and knew alot about diabetes already, I found this book helpful when I was diagnosed with the disease. It is also useful for other family members to read so that they may understand what their loved ones are facing.

I bought this book many years ago when I first discovered I had diabetes. It has been a god send. I use it as my bible. You forget from time to time and it is the best reference book I know of. In fact my daughter just became aware that she also has this disease and I purchased her a copy of this book. She agrees with me. It has helped her as well.
