In this popular American book from the 1920s, accomplished public speaker and self-help charlatan Elsie Lincoln Benedict outlines her pseudo-scientific system of "Human Analysis". She proposes that, within the human race, five sub-types have developed through evolutionary processes, each with its own distinct character traits and corresponding outward appearance. She offers to teach the reader how to recognise these five types of people and understand their innate differences.

When this book was first written it was hailed as a cutting edge book that not only shook up human analysis with its observations and categorisation techniques but advanced the whole sector forward. Sadly its fame was not to last as new ideas, techniques and methods debunked much of what had seemed so true, although in truth it still has much that is relevant and has many revealing insights. However as a piece of social history it reveals much about the thinking of its time and how we can now understand why they came to such conclusions. Self-Help Lifestyle & Sports.

Modern science has proved that the fundamental traits of every individual are indelibly stamped in the shape of his body, head, face and hands-an X-ray by which you can read the characteristics of any person on sight. The most essential thing in the world to any individual is to understand himself. The next is to understand the other fellow.

Elsie Lincoln Benedict and Ralph Paine Benedict. An amusing and fascinating description of the human race, this book delves into the systematic analysis of people and their primary characteristics. It is based on the concept that there are five main personality types. Every type can be identified on sight, and recognition of personalities is centered solely around physical appearance. This science of character recognition is explained in precise terms that are broad enough to relate to. Virtually anyone can connect with and believe in the theory

The most essential thing in the world to any individual is to understand himself. The next is to understand the other fellow. For life is largely a problem of running your own car as it was built to be run, plus getting along with the other drivers on the highway. From this book you are going to learn which type of car you are and the main reasons why you have not been getting the maximum of service out of yourself. Also you are going to learn the makes of other human cars, and how to get the maximum of co-operation out of them. This co-operation is vital to happiness and success. We come in contact with our fellowman in all the activities of our lives and what we get out of life depends, to an astounding degree, on our relations with him.

This book has a basic premise that humans, like dogs, are designed to do certain things. They point out the physical attributes each type of person has, and tell various things about that type of person. I found this to be true. It is hard in the U.S. to find pure types. It was easier to find dominant types. It explained a lot of behavior I noticed with family and friends. This would really help people who hire. Nothing is worse than to be a round peg and have some employer fit you into a triangle hole. If you apply the information to yourself, you then do not waste a lot of effort going in the wrong direction. All types are adult types. Children are not mentioned or written about.

Thought it would be an interesting read to help me with sales at work. Turns out it is an antisemitic book. This is also because of when the book was written. The information could be useful but it is impossible (at least for me) to get past the racist tones.

Tori Texer
The book and content are useful, but are printed and written in a confusing to read way. This copy does not come with the diagrams reference throughout the book.

The book was from over 70 years ago not helpful at all. I expected modern day explanations. The description was missleading

I admit that I have not purchased this book. But I did, however, click on the preview. It is pure HTML formatted code. Something went wrong here. I encourage the publisher to reformat, or re-upload, or both. -Nov 2011
