Strode first achieved fame playing football at UCLA in the late 1930s with Kenny Washington and Jackie Robinson, the team that propelled that college into the gridiron big-time. Later he played semi-pro football and was a professional wrestler. After World War II, he and Washington set a precedent as the first blacks in the National Football League in the modern era; when he was released, Strode played football in Canada.

Goal Dust exceeded my expectations. I only knew him from John Ford westerns. This is a great book for those of us who have seen Woody Strode on film and wondered about who he really wa. he marriage to an Hawaiian Princess and his off camera home life, his days atUCLA,and getting know by most of the Hollywood elite as a running back. The closeness with John Ford,John Wayne's mentor, and how Ford saved John Wayne's bacon when he got angry at Woody during filming of "The man wod shot Liberty Valance",when the Duke got mad at Ford and Lee Marvin, for his lack of military service.

truly a good and talented ma. .

Pioneering black athlete and film actor Woodrow Wilson Strode recalls his. Aka Woody, quite understandably, has written a book that is as questionable as it is engaging. I still haven't made up my mind if I want to trash the book or keep it forever. Woody had a memorable and diverse career, and I have no doubt his book could have been much thicker. Most of us will remember him as the gladiator who fought (and beat) Kirk Douglas as Spartacus.

i've always been a fan of woody strode now finally know more of his story...truly a good and talented man..he will be missed !

Knights from Bernin
Good book by a down-to-earth celebrity. He wrote a lot about other black athletes he was friends with, which is a sign of a very generous gentleman. He was a very interesting man and led a diverse and exciting life.

One of the first two Black football players to play professionally in the USA, when white people still did not want to play sports with Blacks and lose to them in front of other whites. He also mentions how he developed one of the most versatile, muscular and lean physiques when weight training was not condoned by trainers (he performed 1000 pushups, situps and squats daily!). His departure for the Canadian League and the better reception he received there while also being embraced by his Native American brethren was touching too, Woody was part Native. He actually wrestled a bear that had its claws taken off!). Wrestling with many legendary personalities of the era like Gorgeous George (his coming to George's aid when his career was over while living in a run down motel is touching and sad), Hollywood was a natural especially being an ex football player/Wrestler and knowing many people. He always took care of both his families financially. His love for his Hawaiian wife and their long and happy relationship is an example for the rest of us. Insights into his relationship and experiences with such Hollywood actors as Lee Marvin (who kissed him in Las Vegas while drunk!), John Wayne (almost going to blows with the Duke in a stagecoach scene!) and his close relationship with the legendary film director John Ford are discussed. Hope more people get to know this pioneer and are moved as well as influenced by how he lived his life to the full without compromising his ethics or those around him. Highly recommended!!!

A great read. I've been a big fan of Mr. Strode since I saw him in "Tarzan's Three Challenges." The book is illuminating, and Woody as storyteller is entertaining and a refreshing model of humility. He doesn't take himself too seriously, admits his faults and shortcomings - he actually admits he dropped a pass that would have won an important football game - yet emerges as a dignified giant of a human being. Possessor of one of the great muscular bodies ever, he built it up through long sessions of pushups, situps and bodyweight squats. He knew his limitations, but worked within those boundaries to emerge as a respected athlete and actor. This is a must-have for any sports or movie-fan library.

I Knew Woody Personally, he was one of my Heroes as I grew up. He was married to my cousin Tina and I had the Privilege of knowing him the last 10 or 12 years of his life. He autographed his book for me, I've knownn a lot of professional athletes and celebrities and he is the ONLY one I have ever stood in awe of. A Truly Great Man!
