A great introduction to a whole world. Perfect for astute movie viewers who are beginning to suspect that not everything good was made in an English speaking country. And identifies all the significant "waves" of movie production.

This book told me which directors were working, where, and at what time, and why I should care. It also told me what the state of the local movie industry was at the time, whether the director was part of "a wave", or was producing _despite_ unfavorable local conditions.

Thorough coverage. This could easily have been a sort of encyclopedia, a cross-indexed reference work thudding several hundred pages onto the table. Instead it's very brisk, almost abbreviated. And the text is actually a continuously readable stream rather than a collection of "entries" expecting to be dipped into. One doesn't get the feeling either of some nameless editor with giant scissors excising most everything, or of long lists of names and dates having been sprinkled through not enough text. Instead the briskness feels organic, built in from the start.

not what I expected which was reviews [as seen in news papers] of different Asian dvds,,,that being said IT IS A MUST READ for any college student in a movie course....it reviews in a general way how the different Asian countries developed they entrainment products
from crude beginnings to the fine products the produce today....many incites and note on popular actors.

Up until now I only had a vague idea what Asian was, is. Now, though, I now WHY. The author has done a jolly good job putting together information contain therein and I recommend it to any who fancies himself as a cinefile. In other news: the book arrived in good shape. In my mail box, that is.

Pretty cool but its a text book for class.

For a supposedly academic textbook, the author displays more bias here than any other textbook I've read. He blatantly insults American cinema, always claiming that Asian cinema is superior in every way and all good American movies are knock offs of Asian movies. The cinematography, plot, characters, color choices, setting, lighting, and so on, he states that all Asian films are superior in and that American movies are awful. Not worth the the read.

This book is excellent!! You get to learn about the different directors in Asia, and you say start to notice that most of american films are somewhat inspired by Asian cinema.

This book is a great overview of directors and films created from all areas of Asia and Southeast Asia. Good textbook for general foreign cinema studies..
