The Judy Garland Show premiered in 1963. Shipman, David (1975). Judy Garland, The Secret Life of an American Legend.

In this highly-acclaimed biography, Shipman tells the whole story of this doomed and deified performer: her days as a child star, the daughter of a gay father; her ascension to teenage stardom; her introduction to drugs by MGM; her years of alcoholism and substance abuse; her relationship with daughter Liza Minelli; and more. Judy Garland: The Secret Life of an American Legend (1993).

David Herbert Shipman. Norwich, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. Judy Garland: The Secret Life of an American Legend (1993).

Shipman’s far too detailed yet highly readable biography shows Garland as a quintessential product of the Hollywood studio system, with its brutal production schedules and flag-waving hypocrisy.

Shipman offers as fact Garland’s bisexuality and second husband Vincente Minnelli’s flagrant homosexuality. Among the other tidbits: Garland was bored by first husband David Rose because he didn’t like oral sex; she had three abortions (before having her Fallopian tubes tied); and her numerous affairs included an unnamed woman in MGM’s Arthur Freed unit, known on the lot as the fairy unit. Among her celebrated lovers were Mario Lanza, Yul Brynner, Frank Sinatra, Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles.

A provocative look at the private life of the legendary performer reveals intimate details about Garland's bisexuality, her drug and alcohol addiction, and her many abortions.

Just about the most thorough & balanced account of her life. Contains a perfect balance of personal life & career detail that other books miss.

There are stories that one may not believe, some that you may not want to believe but what is true when cross referenced across them all & what is examined as coming from the unimpeachable sources, people such as the doctor who brought her into the world, who with his wife stayed part of Garland's life till the very end there is too much here to dismiss compared to most biographies.

Much that the slavish Garland freaks who beatify here may want to read but not much an objective eye can't imagine to be true especially when revisited years later as other books have come out by unrelated sources that verify indirectly similar behaviors and circumstances. If you could only read one bio on her I'd say this is it

One of the better bio's of Garland but warning it is not overly kind or sympathetic.

Of the many Garland biographies out there, this one is by far one of the best, because it isn't written by a crazed fan. Shipman did a good job detailing the highs and lows of Judy Garland's life. He is not judgmental when he delves into the stories of her lifelong addiction to barbiturates and amphetamines. It's amazing she lasted as long as she did--these drugs were prescribed and given to her by MGM staff and physicians--and by her mother, Ethel, when she was barely a teenager. So, that set the stage for a lifetime of really HIGH highs, and very LOW lows...It is a heartbreaking but also inspiring biography of one of the most amazing stars the world has ever seen. Fans of Judy Garland will have an even deeper appreciation of her amazing, tragic, legendary life after reading "Judy Garland--The Secret Life of an American Legend." It's hard to put down.

To those people who claim that Shipman does indeed hate Judy need to take a closer look. His book is rich in documentation that supports his research. Furthermore, you can telll he was a devoted fan that can still be objective regarding her talent and her misgivings and faults. We have to remember the duress that Judy endured, the people who abandoned her when she most needed help, the promises of the studios to give her time off to replenish her energy and the monstrous effect of Louis B. Mayer. No wonder Liza has problems of her own. She was affected first hand. This review is fair to the artist without tarnishing her talent and accessibility to the public, as well as her warmth. A great read!
