Ava Gardner, was also a spirited woman, not above raising a little hell, drinking too much, or getting physical whenever she felt the need. She didn't see herself as special (no false modesty here, she always knew she was "pretty") and she didn't think of herself as particularly gifted.

She probably would have been happier had she never gone to Hollywood, but remained the lovely southern belle, who raised a loving family and lived un-extraordinary life.

11 November at 08:25 ·. This Veterans Day we send out our deepest appreciation to all who have served in our armed forces. Ava Gardner was a strong supporter of our troops and was seen entertaining and visiting them throughout her life. Here are some pictures of her outreach efforts during World War II.

Peter Evans and Ava Gardner AVA GARDNER The Secret Conversations For my family. I know it’s you, Ava. No one else in the world sounded like Ava Gardner. Nobody I knew anyway. Peter Evans Prologue Her phone calls in the middle of the night had fallen into a habit. I picked up the receiver on the first ring, an old newspaperman’s trick. Did I wake you, honey? she asked softly, without preamble. I said, checking my watch. There was always a sense of weariness, a hint of a recent bender in her voice, even when it wasn’t three o’clock in the morning, even when she was stone-cold sober.

Married three times - to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra - the first two lasted only about a year each whilst her marriage to Sinatra lasted several.

a DAMN good book!!! By Thriftbooks. com User, May 26, 2005. If you can imagine what Ava Gardner was like, then this book is a must. It reads just like you'd imagine it would. This is absolutely the best-of-the-best autobiography I have read to date. I have read Marilyn Monroe's and Maureen O'Hara's, and they weren't nearly as captivating. When I think of Ava Gardner, I use to think of sexuality and booze.

The star of "Show Boat," "The Barefoot Contessa," and "On the Beach" sets the record straight about her spectacular life and Hollywood career

Miss Gardner was a very unique being: Unabashedly beautiful, tempestuous, talented and deeply misunderstood. Her authentic voice comes through so clearly here. Real talk: This is probably one of the most un-actressy books around, written by an entertainer.

There is no pretense, no prettying-up the truth to make the subject more appealing. Miss Ava was The beautiful. Unvarnished truth! She appears very real, flawed, yes, but ultimately lovable. It's easy to see while some of the most celebrated men of her time fell head over heels in love/lust with her. Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, Howard Hughes, Frank Sinatra, George C. Scott, to name but a few.

Some of those men don't come off as great as their public persona's would have us believe. But this is Miss Gardner's story, straight, no chaser.

But then, the world would have never known her splendor.

She gave us such a radiant and radiating screen presence, and for this we are glad.

Apparently, she lived one hell of an interesting real life as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Ava Gardner through her memoir. She was earthy, outspoken, and impulsive, with an unstoppable zest for life. Her marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra are described in detail as are her affairs with many well-known men. Although she constantly claims to be very shy, she managed to rise to the top of her profession and live life on her own terms.

The book is based on a series of interviews, so it's chatty, humorous, and full of energy, She often refers to the reader as, "honey," and seems to truly enjoy talking about her wild life.

There are many good black and white photos and also some chapters about her written by famous friends. It is sad that she died only months after the book was written.

Highly recommended.

Sharing her life story had to be difficult for this one-time Grabtown, N.C. beauty. I am thankful that she did share because of the extraordinary life she led. Her relationships with some of the most memorable characters of the 20th century are enlightening and entertaining.

Disappointed this book wasn’t what it was meant to be. Since the original author was fired for not disclosing his Sinatra connection, this book was very watered down and not the “tell all” glimpse into Hollywood back in its hay day.

Nobody ever went to see Ava Gardner in a movie because they were expecting a great acting performance. She was eye candy to millions. Of the three dozen or so movies she made, maybe a dozen were in the category of interesting or memorable. She acknowledges that her best role was in Mogambo because she was playing herself and felt more relaxed because her hero, Clark Gable, was her leading man.

Throughout her autobiography she keeps acknowledging that she made mistakes but was not looking for a mulligan to do her life over. She talks about her marriages to three people who treated her as an object as well as the jerk but gifted George C. Scott who would have killed her, given the chance.

She was not a very smart lady, always seeming to be a glutton for her heartaches including her decision to have two abortions.

As any such type of celebrity book that one writes in retrospect about their life, she tells some good tales, is boring in a few spots, but does a great job in giving us the background on a handful of her greatest movies.

Worth the purchase of this Southern girl's exploits.

Entertaining and enjoyable read that portrays Ava's truly ballsy behavior in a time a woman was meant to submit to patriarchy. Loved the insight to her various relationships and outlook on life.

Risteacor
Nicely written memoir. Loaded with insider information about Hollywood's golden age. The stories about Howard Hughes are priceless.

Probably the best autography I've read. Miss Gardner is very candid on all aspects of her life.
