Mathematical Sorcery: Revealing the Secrets of Numbers

Mathematical Sorcery: Revealing the Secrets of Numbers. 073820496X (ISBN13: 9780738204963). When Mr. Clawson promised at the beginning of the book that if you remembered your college algebra and geometry that you'd be able to get through the book without problems, I was foolish enough to believe him. Let me state here and now that while you probably can get through it with just that, you WILL get bogged down.

Mathematical Sorcery : Revealing the Secrets of Numbers. by Calvin C. Clawson. In this captivating quest for pure knowledge, Clawson takes readers on a journey of discovery to divulge the wisdom of the ancient Greeks, Sumerians, Babylonians, and Egyptians, whose stunning revelations have deep meaning to this day. 134 illustrations.

Publisher: Perseus Books. Clawson is clearly enthusiastic about mathematics, being a true believer in the power it has to excite and enthrall while it helps us understand the physical world we find ourselves in. I have read many math books in the past decades, but none where the authors enthusiasm for the subject comes across any stronger than it does in this one. I have recommended that the library purchase the book and also that it be used in courses in mathematical history.

Out of all the books I've read on the subject of math, this is by far one of the best. It is evident that Clawson is passionate about his topic and it shines through the pages. He can convey the beauty and power of mathematics in such a way that anyone can share in that. You don't have to be an engineer or mathematician to understand what he is talking about, while at the same time, even the initiated can learn a thing or two.

This book ties in with the wisdom of the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Sumerians, and Greeks, captivating the quest for pure knowledge. The secrets of the golden mean are also explored, which is one of the things that drew me to this book. This book will take you on to an incredible journey involving the language of numbers. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in understanding the language of numbers, nature and the universe. Great Book.
