Difficulty: Advanced Keywords: Opening. Chinese: 中国流 布局 (zhōngguóliú bùjú) Japanese: 中国流 布石 (chūgokuryū fuseki) Korean: 중국식 포석 (junggukshik poseok). The Chinese opening or Chinese fuseki is the opening pattern that is characterized by the black moves (or a) in this diagram. Black is not enclosing the bottom right corner but playing on a somewhat larger scale. In an even more famous example, Kato Masao claimed in his book The Chinese Opening that the Chinese opening originated in Japan and was introduced to Chinese players by Yasunaga Hajime.

The Chinese opening is indisputably one of the most important openings in modern Go. It shows up frequently in games from players from 10kyu through 9 Dan professional. This book introduces the fundamental concepts and shows you how to think about this opening. There are important variations developed since this book was published, so while this book is not sufficient by itself for consistent success with (or against) the Chinese opening in present day Dan level play, it will give you the right frame of mind and allow you to survive well enough to have a fighting chance in the middle game.

In my own experience I bought and read this book when I was around 8 kyu, and the primary benefit from reading this book and then playing the Chinese opening was that it helped me learn how to attack a weak group. I played this opening every chance I got and it was a major part of my advance until about 3 kyu. At that point I began to run into players well versed in the more modern responses, and I was a bit tired of playing the same thing. I focused on playing a moyo style to improve my reading and fighting in the center. ( I mostly played Takamiya's 5-5 ). But in the last year I have returned to the Chinese, and studied some modern variations on Guo Juan's audio lesson site, and it has helped me finally get over the hump to 1 Dan. I heartily recommend this book if you can stomach the price for an out of print classic.

This book introduced me to studying fuseki.
I liked it at that time because I could use some of the ideas in a fuseki I could understand, that would be somewhat flexible and keep things simple. After that I've got more interested in studying fuseki.
It's not a dictionary, and is not worth "memorizing". It is interesting to see how each stone develops the game in a given direction.
When I read it I was about IGS 9k*

In this book Kato Masao analizes in detail the Chinese fuseki. This is the first fuseki I've learned: the basic ideas are quite easy to grasp and it allows Black to make a vast zone of influence that White will have to invade, creating a fight where Black can take the advantage. There are few josekis in this book but they are analized in depth - something more useful and interesting than an overview of lots of josekis.
