The world of fantasy sports is no longer the purview of nerds and stat geeks. In fact, versions of the game are currently played by tens of millions of people worldwide. But while fantasy sports may have begun as a light-hearted diversion, to many of its participants winning or losing is no laughing matter. The book takes readers on a journey from the casinos of Atlantic City to charred Connecticut campgrounds, from the Last Supper to the Constitutional Convention that started our country down the road to democracy, from the back rooms of Wall Street to the jury rooms of our judicial system. In doing so, Mass demonstrates that winning fantasy advice can come from anyone and be found almost anywhere—the wit and wisdom of William Shakespeare, the scientific genius of Stephen Hawking, or the futuristic whimsy of a galaxy far, far away. Ultimately, How Fantasy Sports Explains the World is not a book about how to win your fantasy sports league. Instead, it is a collection of conversation starters and hypothetical scenarios that get right to the core of what makes fantasy games so compelling in the high-speed information age: how to process and make use of the bottomless pile of data presented to us on a daily basis.

I was expecting something meatier, but this was a fun read. AJ tells some good stories, like his stint as a blackjack dealer in Atlantic City, but I was expecting more insights. It is too bad that fantasy sports are so named, because it's become much less imaginary than the name indicates, thanks in part to guys like AJ ... and people like you and me, who love playing them.

Decent book, I recommend Matthew Berry's Fantasy Life more but it's a decent read if you or someone you know is obsessed with fantasy sports

Alan Mass has a unique and refreshingly honest sense of humor. When reading through his many stories, you can't help but think that it would be great to have a beer with this guy.

A fun read for sports and fantasy sports fans. I just started getting into fantasy football this year. Alan Mass' stories put fantasy sports into a better perspective for me as well.

If you take the fans of the best selling books Freakanomics and Super Freakanomics and then take fans of fantasy baseball, football, basketball (and presumably other sports), you probably have several HUNDRED MILLION people.

All of them should buy this book.

ESPN writer A.J. Mass has created an engaging, amusing and informative book that takes "real-world" examples and tells us how to apply them to our fantasy sports teams. He also takes the exact opposite tack, showing how the way one approaches his or her fantasy team has corollaries that should be extended to the aforementioned "real-world."

Whether you are a fan of Albert Pujols or Star Wars, casino gambling or Allen Iverson's Mom, or even the great bard William Shakespeare, this book has something for everyone. Pick it up for yourself - and it will make a great gift for the fantasy sports addict in your life!

I'm really enjoying How Fantasy Sports Explains the World. The correlations he makes between real life situations and fantasy strategy is fascinating and informative. And his anecdotes about his own life are entertaining. It's cool to read a book that has elements of both a good story and practical ways to improve your life. Nice combo AJ, well done.

AJ Mass wrote quite the book incorporating real life and fantasy sports. Give it a read, it will not disappoint. Matthew Berry also penned a great foreword.

AJ Mass has produced excellent works on fantasy sports for ESPN.com and that level of excellent continues in to this book. In a genre that has become flooded with writers who all seem to have the same opinions and dispense them in the same format, AJ has a unique style that is refreshing to say the least. Where else would a book about fantasy sports reference The West Memphis Three, Star Wars, Allen Iverson and Quantum Physics and still somehow all make sense and fit together perfectly?
This book is a must read for all fantasy players and those interested in the phenomenon of fantasy sports. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed in this book and will learn more than you ever thought you could from a book about fantasy sports.

A very entertaining book by this Fantasy anylast who was once a baseball mascot, and a casino dealer. Having to have worked with A.j. in the same casino , I especially liked the Iverson story. A must read for all who idolize #3. you won't anymore.
