The Navajo Nation covers a territory larger than the combined states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. It is the largest reservation-based Indian nation within the United States, both in land area and population. The Spanish and Mexicans called them "Apaches de Navajo": "Navajo" is a modified Tewa word meaning "planted fields" and "Apache" is the Spanish version of the Zuñi word for "enemies. In 1969 the Navajo Tribal Council officially designated the nation the "Navajo Nation.

This book documents the collection of Navajo weavings at the Denver Art Museum. The first few pages explain how the collection came to be; the next section is a brief but informative history of weaving in Navajo culture, with full-color photos of some of the early blankets and rugs. The main part of the book is about the Gloria F. Ross Collection, with photos of beautiful serapes and blankets. Following that are two-page spreads of individual Navajo weavers, with a biography on the left and a full-page color photo of one of their weavings on the right. A total of 38 artists are included

The Navajo people, the Diné, passed through three different worlds before emerging into this world, The Fourth World, or Glittering World. The Diné believe there are two classes of beings: the Earth People and the Holy People. The Holy People are believed to have the power to aid or harm the Earth People. Since Earth People of the Diné are an integral part of the universe, they must do everything they can to maintain harmony or balance on Mother Earth. It is believed that centuries ago the Holy People taught the Diné how to live the right way and to conduct their many acts of everyday life.

Tell us about the Navajo theory of the first people. Bring it home for us, Craig, by telling us what you believe is ultimately the real story of the populating of North America, and what surprised you most during your travels? What I took away was that people came from everywhere. The first people there came out of the ground. These are stories related to origin and creation stories all over the Americas.

The first people who arrived in Beringia were probably small, highly mobile groups evolving in a large landscape, probably depending on the availability of seasonal resources," says Lauriane Bourgeon of the University of Montreal, Canada. These people did well to seek refuge there. Central Beringia was a much more desirable environment than the icy lands they had left behind.
