In scintillating detail, Albert Marrin tracks the rat/human progress and how one species has helped or hurt (usually hurt) the other over the course of our evolution. From their ancestors to how they've killed us with plague, eaten our food, or been eaten by us (yum!) we see rats in every form and face. We view them as caring family members and fast breeders. Sometimes the book will open up onto a full-page picture of rats balancing on telephone wires or led by a Pied Piper to their doom. And on occasion Marrin seems to run out of strictly rat-related factoids so he may, for example, complement a.

Oh, Rats! Is the story. This is a fascinating book about the different roles rats play in society- from carrying diseases to saving lives by detecting landmines and TB through people's saliva. Oh, Rats! Is the story of how rats and humans have interacted throughout history. Sometimes the interaction is congenial, sometimes not so much. The book has great engaging writing with clear concepts that readers will easily understand. When I first picked it up, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was a fascinating read. I especially liked the inset passages giving more rat-related information. The illustrations went with the text beautifully.

In our world and on our planet, WE have many animals, and each being has its own story to tell and its own experiences and choices, and WE try to remain open to learning about ALL beings and to access our favorite Amazon to help us in our quest of continuing knowledge about all subjects. When WE open ourselves to POSSIBILITIES of learning about subjects which are not in the mainstream, we are surprized to find our learning process has been enhanced by that which is not in the mainstream and still has lessons to offer and for US to glean new and/or interesting innuendos into our own lives and useful information to help or enhance our own journeys, so, yes, we and our friends have enjoyed this book and others and continue to read as much as possible as time permits, and hope you have many lovely blessed experiences in your serious quests for knowledge also with the help of Amazon.

The book has a lot of information about rats. Some of it is pretty incredible. I always knew there was a potential for rats in any given location, but this publication makes me more aware of the likelihood. I was hoping for a more lighthearted approach to the subject. Still, it is a very interesting read.

I used this as my read aloud for a unit on nonfiction reading in 5th grade. My students loved it. They were suprised, grossed out, and even impressed by the information presented. I would recommend this book for children and adults alike!

I used Oh Rats! to jump start a debate unit and found it to be a fabulous resource. I didn't read the entire book, but picked passages that supported rats as helpful and rats as a problem. The students decided which side of evidence each passage supported. The most difficult part was asking them to suspend their judgement, but as the evidence suggested, rats have a place in the world. I when so far as to pick up a rat puppet (we named him Rod) and the students just loved it! Oh Rats! proves there are two sides to every story!
