Rabbit and the Lovely Present, written by Charlotte Zolotow and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, is a 1962 pictures book published by HarperCollins. It was a Caldecott Medal Honor Book for 1963 and was one of Sendak's Caldecott Honor Medal of a total of seven during his career. Sendak won the Caldecott Medal in 1964 for Where the Wild Things Are, which he both authored and illustrated.

Lovely art by Maurice Sendak, but the story had no movement or excitement. There are 4 repeats of the story and by the 4th I wanted to close the book. The kids didn’t like the rabbit either. They were bored by the story and the ending had no excitement. sense of aesthetics to vehemently object, but from the title of the book itself, from Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present, I did in fact and indeed originally expect more of a small bunny like rabbit with short ears and smaller, less gangling limbs.

Rabbit helps a little girl find a lovely present for her mother, who is especially fond of red, yellow, green. She has written more than seventy books, many of which are picture-book classics, such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and William's Doll. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

The Charlotte Zolotow Award is an American literary award presented annually for outstanding picture book writing published in the United States in the preceding year. Zolotow has two children: writer, Crescent Dragonwagon and poker tournament chamption, Stephen Zolotow. His parents were Polish Jews who had come to the United States before the start of World War I. His first professional job as an illustrator (while he was still in high school) involved adapting the "Mutt and Jeff" newspaper comic strip to a comic book format.

Some people find this story slow. There is a lot of repetition, but because of that, my two year old listener loves it. She adores the pictures which, having been done by Maurice Sendak, are fabulous. It's just a little girl who is trying to figure out what to give her mother. Mr. Rabbit tries very hard to be helpful. What do you think they come up with?

My daughter received this book in her Easter basket and she absolutely loves it! It is a very cute story that keeps my five year old's attention and has her begging me to read it again. My cousin recommended this book, remembering it from her childhood 20+ years ago. This book would also be a great story to incorporate into an art teachers lesson. It talks about colors and could have endless possibilities in the classroom.

The combination of Zolotow and Sendak is totally rewarding, and it's just a nice story showing a conversation between two friends. Nothing exciting or adventurous, and the illustrations are wonderful.

This was my children's favorite book when they were young. This one arrived in excellent condition and is now a favorite of the grandchildren. High quality reproductions of the paintings and the text is as lovely and soothing as it ever was. I highly recommend this book to the parents of young children.

I love this book. I had it as a child but lost it in a fire. Teaches children thoughtfulness in away that’s easily understood. The pictures are stunning.

This book is charming and adorable. It was purchased for a little girl's birthday. Super sweet story.
