The very first Famous Five adventure, featuring Julian, Dick, Anne, not forgetting tomboy George and her beloved dog, Timmy! There's a shipwreck off Kirrin Island! But where is the treasure? The Famous Five are on the trail – looking for clues – but they're not alone! Someone else has got the same idea.

The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage is the first in the series of children's novels the Five Find-Outers by Enid Blyton. It was first published in 1943 and continues to be frequently reissued. The novel centres on the mystery of who could have set fire to Mr Hick’s cottage. The five children, Larry and Daisy Daykin, Pip and Bets Hilton, and newcomer Frederick Algernon Trotteville (later nicknamed Fatty from his initials), meet at the scene of the fire and end up solving the mystery together.

Presently a window opened at the right side of the house, and a man looked out. His head was quite bald on top, and he had a straggling beard that reached almost to the middle of his waistcoat. He wore heavy horn-rimmed glasses that made his eyes look very big. "What are you doing?" he called. Larry went and stood under the window and spoke extremely politely. I hope you don't mind, sir, but our ball fell in your garden, and we're looking for i. A gust of wind blew into the garden and flung Daisy's hair over her face.

I chose this book because I used to read books that Enid Blyton write. Among Enid Blyton’s mystery series, the Five Findouters have always been my favourite (though I read and loved the others too), one reason being the very imaginative solutions to so many of their cases. This time around I’ve decided to read all 15 of the books chronologically for the first time. The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage is the first of the series and opens with siblings Laurence Larry and Margaret Daisy Daykin waking up to the smell of a fire. This novel is easy to read because The writer, she used easy vocabulary and didn't have complex sentences.

At the start of the next book Enid tells us that Fatty's parents enjoyed their Easter stay in Peterswood so much that they then bought a house and much later on in the series when Fatty wants information on places in Peterswood he asks his mother as she has lived in Peterswood for many years.

Are there seven today?. All the children looked out of the window - except Fatty. He didn’t look out of the window. He didn’t look out of the window t bewildered expression on his face. He opened his mouth as if to speak, and then firmly closed it again. But he still went on’Staring at Mr. Hick, very deep in thought. The Tempests came over again, roaring low. Let’s go out and see them, said Larry. We can see them better out-of-doors.

Readers may not know it, but Enid Blyton's best work probably lies in the five findouter series...which begins with this book: "The mystery of the burnt cottage". I believe the only reason this series of books was never so popular was because of the way it was titled, i.e. Five Findouters, and this wasn't so eye catching compared with the Famous Five or Secret Seven.
The story is about 5 children aged from 9 to 13 and a dog, who first meet each other when a cottage burns down due to suspicious circumstances in their little town. They both find that they have a common enemy in Mr. Goon, the pompous village policeman, and despite their differences they pull together in order to beat him in solving the case. At the end of the book starts a beautiful friendship between the five, and they call themselves the 'Five findouters and dog' (coined by Bets (aged 9)) and despite the fact that it was a ridiculous name (as mentioned by Pip, Bets's older brother), it stuck and remained the same for 14 more super mysteries after that.
I believe that the five findouter series is much better in quality, entertainment and plot than most other Enid Blyton books. In this series the kids have realistic and practical lives, with strict but well meaning parents, and sometimes they get hurt by the 'bad guys' which makes it all the more exciting and interesting. As far as plots are concerned they are amazing. Some of them could qualify for an Agatha Christie novel. I was astonished at what depth Enid Blyton could go to in making a great plot.
The kids actually AGE as the books go along...and gain experience as well. For e.g: Fatty learns to disguise himself, and this comes in very handy in later mysteries.
In my opinion, of all the Enid Blyton stories I find this series the best of all. Even now, at age 21, they entertain me immensely. These books are for all...from age 8 to till your really really very old. ENJOY!

Loved this little mystery book. Donated it to our children's library.

It is about a group of children and their dog deciding to solve the mystery in a small English village. It is set in an innocent time, but still enjoyable for probably the higher elementary grades or younger if read to.

Disappointing spelling and persistent grammatical errors. It made fluency difficult making the reading annoying. I recommend a careful revision of the many mistakes present. Only then will it be a pleasure to read.

Was excited to find these books I'd read long ago on Kindle. However the typos are horrendous!! They are so numerous it makes reading next to impossible! Buy a hard copy of the book.

Ugh ! No chapter breaks and replete with so many grammatical, spelling and grammatical mistakes ! They take away all the joy of reading. I had read the series as a child and loved them, and I was looking forward to sharing them with my son. But this just left a bad taste in my mouth. If possible, I would like my money back.

I read the Five-FindOuters series when I was a kid - and am very very glad to see they are still around.
These are great for a 1st grader and get them started on the path to enjoying reading.
This is a nice well written story with a good dose of reality - way better than the crap that comes out of Disney.

I had read Enid Blyton's books when I was in school and to this day almost 50 years later I still am mesmerized by them.

This is a great series! My boys ages 7, 9 and 11 have been reading it and they LOVE it! I definitely recommend it.
