I originally discovered this story in our public library and was deeply moved by the "lesson" within. Sympathy, empathy, sacrifice and compassion are the lessons that young readers easily absorb from the story. I was so impressed by this book, that I used it in my Advanced Reader class of gifted and talented first graders. The kids loved the story and the lessons within were not lost on them. They were moved that a person would risk sacrificing their own happiness out of compassion for another. I wish this were more readily available! A must for all parents with school-age kids!

This is an absolutely stunning book with superb art work and a great story. After reading the other review I was afraid people would think this is an elementary book. I recommend this to anyone who loves fairy tales or a good life lesson. I have read this to fifth graders who were held spellbound ...and we took a survey on how the story might end. Definitely food for thought and a treat for the eyes.
