Book 1 of 2 in the Marvelous World Series. Every since I started a book blog where I only reviewed books with diverse lead characters, i've been dying to read a book about young black male.Young black males have so little to choose from in regards to positive images in the media so I think it's really important to seek books that help with young males and their self esteem, This book definitely can contribute to such acts.

The Book follows Louis Proof, a 13 year old AA kid from East Orange, New Jersey who discovers he's a very important warrior in some far off place in another dimension. He's bestowed unbelievable abilities and has the fate of the world in his young hands, will he be able to do it?

What I liked about this book was very simple. As an avid reader of MG/YA, the amount of POC in leads is certainly lacking. When they are present, it's usually in sidekick mode. This book however features Louis Proof, an AA lead and his best friend is also AA.Together they're two peas in a pod! The relationship he had with his parents was lovely. I was hoping he wouldn't come from some stereotypical single parent house, even though it's very common, It's only ONE way young urban kids live! Not everyone comes from a fatherless home and it was refreshing to see Louis represent that not all urban kids come from broken homes.

Louis was very likable, in fact he was actually really popular! He wasn't a loner or an outcast like you see most lead characters in Ya/MG books. He was liked by all even if he wasn't the king of the school. And he was really nice to everyone so I could see why people liked him,he was a really great friend to have.He could have easily been a boy i befriended in my youth!

Let's face it young POC never get to be the lead in books where something amazingly awesome happens or threatens life as we know it, so this story was a great spin to add to the Fantasy/Speculative Fiction genre. We need more authors contributing to the world of reading with books that feature characters like Louis, non stereotypical and fully capable of leading a story appealing to kids of all cultural backgrounds.

As much as I loved about the book, I did have some issues with the pacing and had a hard time transferring the words on the page to the deep regions of my imagination. Sometimes I felt as though the writing "told" too much rather than "showed"me what was happening. I would have really liked to get in the characters heads showing my how they felt and showing me what they were doing as opposed to being told.

There was a bit of info dumping, sometimes it slowed down the pacing for me. And there were times where I wish there would have been more detailed descriptions of the past and how it held up to the present. Where there were parts I felt buried me in information, there were also areas where I felt like I didn't know enough about what was going on. There were times I felt very lost and not in the best of ways.

The characters:
The Villain was at times kind of silly to me. He had a very grim mission but i didn't know enough about him to really build a fear of him.

Timothy aka Timioosiyon was somewhat interesting but not fully explored. I wish he would have been more in the book.

Lacey aka Louis's ill 7 year old cousin;I liked her, she was cute. I thought she had the drive and strength that Louis did, i just wish she had been older.A lot of the things she could do seemed kinda unrealistic for a girl of 7 years.

Cindy:
Apparently she was supposed to be his "twin" but I knew almost nothing about her,in fact she was rarely mentioned, perhaps she will make a bigger appearance in the next book?

Brandon, Louis's best friend. I think overall he was a great best friend to have, but sometimes I thought he was a little annoying :P

Louis Proof.I liked Louis Proof, he was down to earth and kind and had accepted his role as a CLE, but sometimes I felt as though he was too powerful with no prior guidance.Everything came so natural to him and I would have liked to see him more flawed as a hero.I would have liked to see him struggle with his new found power and perhaps make one wrong decision. He was a little perfect and that about him seemed unrelatable.

Some of the relationships seemed a little rushed.Louis had developed a crush on a girl named "Glitch" and it just seemed kinda out of the blue, I thought that perhaps he had had feelings for one of his other best friends, Angela.

Overall, I have to say I wish there were more books like it. We need more diversity in books especially heroes like Louis Proof...

Any book that gets the kids reading is a great book to me. But 'The Marvelous Effect' was a fun read for me, too. I had heard the comparisons to Harry Potter, but found the story to be original and interesting. The main characters are kids, and there are good and bad guys, but that's where the similarities end. The basic concept is that two young boys (Louis Proof and his friend, Brandon) and Louis's little cousin, Lacey, have this great adventure against the bad guys from another dimension. I found the characters adorable but not icky where the boys wouldn't want to read the book. They are a little street at times, which I think makes the books kool for the kidz! 4 out of 4 liked it, aged 11, 12 and 13.

It was awesome to give my son an action novel where the main character is black. The storyline was exciting and well-written. I'm hoping to see this series on the big screen one day.

This series was a birthday present to my step son and he loved It! I received major brownie points

Lonesome Orange Kid
I was happy to get this book for a reading program I am involved with. It shows that character matters and good character comes from a supportive family and through the choices one makes along life's journey. This book also teaches tenacity, holding strong to your principles and convictions. It shows there is a reward as well as satisfaction in doing what is right.

I love this book. I think it is very original, creative, and funny. It is about a boy who is stricken with a strange illness and when he wakes up. The world is a lot different than he remembered. He goes on a quest to find out why it is all happening. Although this book has an African-American protagonist and characters, it is for kids of all different races.

I advise future reviewers to please read the book before you compare it to any books out there. I am not about to give away all of the story. Read it for yourself. You will enjoy it.

I'm ALMOST done with this book and am looking forward to the next book(s) in the series. Its a wonderful mix of modern American times, magic, adventure and sci fi, where a couple of young kids/tweeners learn the value of their skills and how to be unique!

This is my son's favorite book. I have no idea how many times he has read. He loved the book and wish the author wrote more than just two.
