Jan Thomas, on a roll with the recent A Birthday for Cow! and What Will Fat Cat Sit On?, addresses my third fear with success in The Doghouse. Funny while maintaining an underlying truth (the unknown can be scary), Doghouse will be a great addition to your story time repertoire. As with previous books by this author, the storyline is uncluttered. Beginning on the endpapers, we discover that Cow, playing a game with Mouse, Duck, and Pig, has accidentally kicked a red rubber ball into the doghouse.

This Jan Thomas book like many others from it's series is basically a joke spread out on a book. It is appropriate for young children, but probably not a substitute for a real book. We found that kids definitely enjoy the jokes and can even learn to recite them, which is great.

In the Doghouse" is a science fiction short story by American writers Orson Scott Card and Jay A. Parry. It appears in his short story collection Maps in a Mirror. Card originally published this story in the December 1978 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. An entire species of aliens fleeing from a doomed planet sends an agent ahead to the planet Earth to prepare the way for the arrival of their minds, the only part of themselves they have been able to preserve.

My daughter's favorite book (she's 20 months). She has me read it several times a day and even tries to read it herself, making a face and yelling "Stinky!" at Pig and "Oh no! Come back!" when someone doesn't come out of the dog house. From the first read she has laughed the whole way through, especially when Dog tells Mouse he's having Duck for dinner. She really gets the joke which is amazing. I also find this to be the least annoying book to read over and over again since there's a story, it's not long, and it's got a twist which is something few books for this age have. I've bought other Jan Thomas books since she loves this one but she still just wants to read this one. Highly recommend.

There is a real art to writing a book that is simple enough for youngsters, yet still entertaining and engaging. Jan Thomas hits the nail on the head with The Doghouse. It's an adorable book with an engaging story and cute, bold illustrations. And the punchline at the end is fabulous.

I bought this for my three-year-old grandson after having read another book by the same author that I liked a lot. This one is even better! My grandson loves it, and I love reading it to him. We want to read it over and over. Highly recommended to all with young children.

I have 3 grandsons, 2-3 years old. They absolutely love this book, especially when read with a bit of drama. My 2 year old twin grandsons were introduced to The Doghouse when they came to visit and discovered that it was their 3 year old cousin's favorite book. So I bought one to take to their house. In one three day weekend grandma and grandpa probably read this book 50 times. We'd finish and they'd say "again," over and over again until we gave out. Of course they had it memorized before the weekend was out and then I could just turn the pages and let them "read" it. All three boys love books, but this one has really engaged their imagination and they cannot get enough of it.

I rarely write reviews but my kid loved this book so much that I really needed to share it. This is a really fun book for kids this age (1.5 year), there are animals, a story short enough for them to understand what's going on as well as room for them and the reader to play.
I originally bought it as a gift for one of his friend but decided to keep it...
I really recommend it!

We first heard this book at a library preschool reading. My twins are 3 and can recite it. They LOVE this book. it captivates them because there's something very exciting about the storyline... how each animal goes into the doghouse to retrieve the ball but doesn't come out. The illustrations are funny. I love how they give a good examples of the use of adjectives... pig is smart, pig is wise, pig is stinky. LOL. In the end is a surprising twist, where there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of, but all sorts of silly. We had to buy it because we checked it out at the library way too often.

We love this book. Love, love, love the author. Every book by her is hilarious. But the fact that THIS copy of The Doghouse is made with those cardboard pages is heaven. I want more of these. It's THE BEST being able to read Jan Thomas and not worry about pages being ripped off.

My 4yr old LOVES this book! They read it at school and she just had to have it for her personal bookshelf!!

This book has a clever story. It is funny for kids and the illustrations are clean and easy to understand.

We bought this because our kids liked the dust bunnies book so well. This one is on par and really build confidence in early readers. Plus they have so much fun reading it they sit alone and it doesn't feel like reading. They get pretty charismatic while reading Jan Thomas books and this one is no exception. Great buy for the price!
