A is for America (2001).

His first published children's book was Fibblestax, the story of a boy who wins the right to name every single thing in the world. A is For America followed in 2001. Its serendipitous release just before the 9/11 terrorist attacks made it a national bestseller, especially popular among teachers. Also a songwriter and musician, Scillian released a companion CD of the same title. The A Is For America album is a child's country and western musical tour of American history.

Nice facts in the margin in addition to the text. The items for each number were very well chosen. Only issue is that some of the images could have been better selected (I mean, who plays hopscotch with 13 spaces? and why was that image for the original thirteen states? and why does the page of "M" states have a practically blank blackboard instead of showing the actual states?) The lack of including a maps or images that brought the text to life was a BIG reason why this book only gets 3 stars. Great educational value, but could have been better image wise.

Here are the numbers:
1- One nation
2- Carolinas and Dakotas (ignores the Virgininas) PLUS two neigbors (Canada and Mexico)
3- Ships Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria PLUS three points on the hats worn during the Revolution
4- Faces in Mount Rushmore
5- Great Lakes
6- New England States (no map given)
7- Mercury Seven astronauts
8- "M" states (no map given)
9- Baseball players PLUS supreme court
10- Bill of rights
11- Dixie states (no map given)
12- Buying in dozens
13- Flag stripes and original colonies
14- Vermont the first new state of many
15- Years to build the Statue of liberty
20- Four Score in the Gettysburg address
50- States
100- Senate seats and Ben Franklin (on $100 bill)

My Grandkidlets range in age from three to eleven. I gave this book to each of them for Christmas and the older ones read it immediately. The younger ones were so enthralled by the pictures they asked for the book to be read to them right away.

Lots of American history trivia in a friendly easy to read format. As a teacher I also like the fact that for each entry there is an rhyming easy-to-read passage plus a more detailed one for the higher readers.

One Nation is a "follow-up" to A is For America by the same author as this book. The rhyming schemes flow easily for reading aloud to children and the pages are packed with US trivia tied to numbers(i.e. the number 4 is explored using Mount Rushmore's 4 presidents and the site's history). Also impressive with this book is the illustrations. Again, the same illustrator that did A is For America is at work here. While the illustrations for A/America are very nice, the illustrations here are excellent. The pictures of the Bill of Rights, Abe Lincoln and the 100 dollar bill make the book with getting. One Nation is a welcome addition to any book collection especially if you are a history buff or have been following along with the alphabet series for each state.

If you're familiar with David Barton and Wallbuilders you'll understand where I'm coming from. I have not purchased this book, but I just looked at the preview pages and I see that they have taken the liberty to remove "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. If that is a concern for you, as it is for me, you may want to think twice about ordering this book.

This little book was for my four young grandchildren (ages 6 - 14). Since they will be visiting our nation's capital in a few days, it was especially meaningful for each of them.
We had fun reading all of it together!
