Pionner Summer is a book that really has it all. Pioneer Summer deals with emotional issues that children, regardless of the historical era, have in common.
Pionner Summer is a book that really has it all. Eight-year-old Charlie is leaving his home and friends and making his way to a new home. His parents are committed abolitionists. Charlie must decide if he feels as strong about the issue of slavery. The other reason Pioneer Summer is an excellent book for the student is because the story brings to life an time in history that is rarely given adequate attention in history books.
Pioneer Summer - Deborah Hopkinson. ONE. When Charlie spied the bird’s nest in the branch of the tree, he just had to have it. Even if it meant walking across the thin ice on Polliwog Pond. Maybe it’s a kingbird’s nest, Danny, Charlie told his old black dog. Grandpa will know for sure. Charlie Keller loved to collect things-rocks, butterfly wings, pressed flowers, old snake skins, anything.

Details (if other): Cancel. This is a very good Ready -for- Chapters book. The information in the book is really nice. It is fiction but, the reader can get an idea of what it was like coming out from the East to make Kansas a free state. I like how it is a series book so, the reader can see how the family grows and changes over time while living in Kansas.
