Katie Morag’s own birthday has a couple of extra pages too. I also liked the way the book had a calendar at the end that you could put your family birthdays in (or an older child could). It was also a great touch that it had ‘how to make’ pages showing things that Katie Morag had made for her family and how you could do them yourself, my daughter immediately wanted to make the birthday card. Mairi Hedderwick is the author and illustrator of the much loved Katie Morag series of children's books the first of which was published in 1984. Hedderwick has also written and illustrated several travel books, including Highland Journey and An Eye on the Hebrides.

Mairi Hedderwick (born 2 May 1939) is a Scottish illustrator and author, best known for the Katie Morag series of children's picture books set on the Isle of Struay, a fictional counterpart of the real-life inner Hebridean island of Coll where Hedderwick has lived at various times for much of her life. She has also written several books of travel writing for adults, and is the illustrator of a growing range of Hebridean stationery.

Image caption Mairi Hedderwick says the Katie Morag in her books is based on her childhood dreams of island life. She says: "In one book called the Island of Adventure she describes the sea and the sea birds and I saw for the first time the Hebrides, through the medium of Enid Blyton. Mairi Hedderwick did not grow up on a Scottish island, she does not have red hair and her family was very different to the one depicted in the Katie Morag books. Hedderwick, who says she grew up as an only child in a house with no children's books, was just 12 when her father died, shattering her cosy family unit.

Just a heads up that this is nothing like the other Katie Morag stories. Each new page is titled a month and gives a paragraph or two about a birthday that month. i.e. January is Flora Ann McColl's first birthday, February is Neilly Beag's birthday, etc. There is a bit of a story woven throughout the book with each month Katie asking "When is it my birthday" which comes in May. She continues to ponder it each month after as well - gets a little tiresome. Not nearly as interesting or captivating as the other books that are much better written stories - this is a bit more childish or youngish than a number of her other stories. She sounds almost whiny which was not the perception we had of Katie. There is a cake recipe and a card craft amongst some other stuff scattered throughout the book. Disappointing for my family - we were really looking forward to some new stories.

This is a lovely addition to any Katie Morag collection, containing a different birthday for members of her family for each month of the year. Your child will learn more about the relationships between the characters and also about the calendar. Also includes crafts and recipies. Would make a great gift for a child's birthday. Best for someone who is already familiar with the other Katie Morag books, since it doesn't really have stories, just a page for each person, but might make a fun introduction. The same lovely, detailed and atmospheric drawings of the imaginary Scottish island of Struay.

Wonderful illustrations that flow through each of the stories, very engaging for children.
