Our son just turned three, and we had to put down our dog, who was fourteen. We're not religious, so we wanted a book that dealt with the subject of pet death in an honest and compassionate way. This book helped us find the language to help our son understand what was happening to our dog, and it gave him a touchstone for understanding the permanence of the loss after our dog died. Now, a month after the death of our beloved dog, my son still asks to read this book, and it helps him remember his love for our dog. While I agree with other reviewers that the part about the narrator's siblings not loving the dog as much as the narrator is strange, I just skip over that part when reading and my son is none the wiser. I highly recommend this book for those trying to explain pet death and the subsequent grief to a young child.

My oldest cat died a little over 6 months ago. I had another one who died a few years back, but this loss hit me super hard. We were super close. She had been really sick for about a year and I was by her side 24/7 during that time, but she was not ready to go until the day she got to go. She made a point to live fully 'til the very end. She was my best friend for 19 and a half years. After a month of holding in the emotions and not really coping so well, I ordered this book and a workbook. Pet loss sadness seems to be not always understood by everyone close to you who was not attached to that pet, so I learned to keep it to myself. I read this book in five seconds and just to have it around kinda helped. It took months of why her, a whole lot of denial, wondering that I had done the right thing, then super sad emptiness and only now I can think of her and not sob. I have not gotten up the nerve to do the workbook yet. But just to see this book on the table and flip thru it every once in awhile reminded me that we had some really good times and not so good times together all those years, but she knew I loved her and she was better off not being in pain any more. Man, she was the best little creature ever. Thanks to this author for helping me cope a little better.

This is a sweet book. I would recommend buying it BEFORE your pet passes away. There is a repeating theme of the brother and sister who didn't tell the dog they loved her, but the main little boy did. It would be nice to buy if your dog is old or ill, it would be a good reminder for the children to tell the dog they love him everyday and then a nice book of comfort after the dog passes. BUT we bought it after our dog passed for our 2, 3 and 5 year old. I have changed the words when reading it to them, as they became upset that the book was telling them they didn't tell their dog they loved him enough and that he was sad.

Great little book for parents to share with their kids to help them express and deal with their feelings after the loss of a favorite pet. My 2 grand kids, ages 4 and 7, recently lost their dog that had been the family dog ever since each of them were born. She would have been regarded as "elderly" in dog years and had been sick and not getting better even after seeing the vet and even though the kids were aware of this, they were still devastated at the time of her death. This is the first death of a pet that either of them had experienced in their short lifetimes so far and their Mom bought this book to read to them and it has become one of their favorite books now. Of course, my 7 yr old granddaughter can read it herself and still reads it again and again. It has seemed to help provide a little comfort to kids who are experiencing the death of a a pet for the first time and we recommend it to others also.

Bought to read to my 11 year old daughter who's special needs (she has Rett Syndrome) after loosing her best friend, her brother (4), in July from cancer. She's non verbal but cries when we read it, but it's helped a lot with trying to explain a loss to her.

I bought this book to read with my daughter after our dog passed. I read reviews that it was a good book to read with children to help with grief. However, I found myself changing the words to the book when it took on an odd turn of chastising the main character’s brother and sister for not having told the dog that they loved him. I found it unusual for a book to help with grief to suddenly turn into a cautionary tale of sorts. Other than that the book was ok, luckily my daughter is too young to read that on her own, after a dog has passed is not the time to warn about not saying I love you. I said I love you frequently to my dog, but was still a bit offended by this addition to the book.

A cute book, but not useful for us at all. I wish I had read reviews first. It continual talks about how the boy told his pet DAIlY I love you and how his siblings didn’t but he didn’t feel bad when pet died cause he said I love you every day. We expect to lose a pet soon and tho it will be hard for my kids they are not exceptionally attached and def don’t tell him they love him daily. This book would only make them feel crappy for not telling him.

I cannot say enough about this book. A copy of this book was first given to my family when I was young and we lost our first "family" pet. After reading the book, my mom started saying "I will always love you", which now seems like it holds more weight than "I love you". As an adult, I bought this for a friend and her son when they lost their family dog. I know she's still mourning her loss but says they've read it many times already, so I hope it one day means to them what it does to me.
