More Than Anything Else book. Marie Bradby has avidly studied Washington's life and wanted to write a book because she was concerned about the lack of books about African-American children after her son was born.

More Than Anything Else book. This is going to be a definite addition to my read-aloud library.

A Richard Jackson book. I ask only once a year: please help the Internet Archive today.

A fictionalized story about the life of young Booker T. Washington. Living in a West Virginia settlement after emancipation, nine-year-old Booker travels by lantern light to the salt works, where he labors from dawn till dusk. Good read for Black History Month or Reading Month. com User, March 19, 2002. This beautifully illustrated book follows the story of a young black boy who wants - more than anything else - to be able to read. He works with his father in the salt mines and listens at night to the wonder of the man in the camp who reads aloud from the newspaper to the others who cannot read it for themselves.

BookTalk with Abi Elphinstone.

Bradby's fine first book is tautly written, with a poetic, spiritual quality in every line. The beautifully executed, luminous illustrations capture the atmosphere of an African-American community post-slavery: the drudgery of days consumed by back- breaking labor, the texture of private lives conducted by lantern- light. As a boy of nine, Booker works in a salt mine from the dark of early morning to the gloom of night, hungry for a meal, but even hungrier to learn to read. Readers follow him on his quest in Malden, Virginia, where he finds inspiration in a man & as me'' reading a newspaper on a street corner. An alphabet book helps, but Booker can't make the connection to words.

Marie Bradby, Steven Kellogg. Scholastic Paperbacks (T), 1997. This book does a great job of leaving it open for questions so that children can make inferences. Then at the end of the story, what he wants more than anything else is revealed. Would read this with first or second graders. Tam incelemeyi okuyun.

Wanting to learn how to read above all other ambitions, nine-year-old Booker T. Washington fears that his long days in the saltworks will prevent him from trying, until a final burst of determination makes his hopes possible.

Wonderful, big and realistic pictures. This triumphant story reads like poetry. I appreciate the unique facts presented too. For example I didn't know that some slaves worked in Salt Mines. This is a good springboard to explore history and geography. The size of the book is excellent for an audience too.

Great book. I just wish it included a short bio of Booker T. Washington.

My son is 4. He is like most of the kids in America who have everything. I used to tell him there were children without food and could not afford to go to school. He did not understand. When I read him this story, his eyes were wide opened. I can tell this story hit his heart really hard, and definitely touched his soul. I am not an African American, but I almost cried. We have to show our children how lucky they are today. They definitely have more than they need, and do not know how to appreciate.

I adore this book. I first read it when I was 24? years old. I absolutely love to read! I feel that the magic of the written word is conveyed in this book! The desire to acquire that magic eventually leads to education. And the absolute determination of the protagonist to learn to read changes not only himself (a real historical figure), but more importantly the world around him. This final realization only comes if you already have a certain basic knowledge of history. But wow, te difference it can make.

Story about who a boy who dreams of reading. Good motivator.

Disappointed in the story's end. Why did it end without a resolve to the boys desire to learn to read. Because of that I can't use it at school to read to the kids

The book is alright. It was a lot shorter/ brief than I would have liked. I don't think it's a book worth owning, but checking it out from the library once would be good.

I have not go the order that I purchased. I'm very up set because I did pay for the item but have not got it at all
