So here is a generous assortment, varied in period, subject matter and style, chosen to appeal to the teen aged boy. Some moderns are here- Eliot, Sandburg, Langston Hughes, Osbert Sitwell, Vincent McHugh, but few experimentalists, and not enough that provide the lure to go on into the realm of poetry. John Clare (13 July 1793 – 20 May 1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption. Books to the ceiling, Books to the sky, My piles of books are a mile high. I had a Mother who read me the things That wholesome life to the boy heart brings – Stories that stir with an upward touch, Oh, that each mother of boys were such! You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be – I had a Mother who read to me. What is a Book? By Lora Daunt. We read books of poems and prose – Some of these and some of those. Read some too, and you’ll agree, Books are good for you and me! Pass The Poems, Please By Jane Baskwill.

The Old Year's gone away To nothingness and night: We cannot find him all the day Nor hear him in the night: He left no footstep, mark or place In either shade or sun: The last year he'd a neighbour's face, In this he's known by none.

John Clare (13 July 1793 – 20 May 1864, Northamptonshire, England). The Old Year's gone away To nothingness and night: We cannot find him all the day Nor hear him in the night: He left no footstep, mark or place In either shade or sun: The last year he'd a neighbour's face, In this he's known by none. All nothing everywhere: Mists we on mornings see Have more of substance when they're here And more of form than he. He was a friend by every fire, In every cot and hall - A guest to every heart's desire, And now he's nought at all.
