The Baby-Sitters Club Claudia breaks her leg due to a prank executed by one of her baby sitting charges. She has an internal crisis about her identity as a baby sitter and an artist, while her fellow baby sitters wage war on the client who caused the prank in the first place. I read this book when I was about nine. I remember I left it at a friend's house and was furious when she later pretended it was her book (even going so far as to write her name in the cover!) Claudia and the Bad Joke is the 19th book in the original The Baby-Sitters Club series. So Claudia the babysitter has to sit for a practical joker and this kid is kind of a rat. What really bothered me when I read this as a kid was that the child who played all these practical jokes, Betsy, apparently had no conscience, and her parents must be oblivious. We get to see Claudia breaking her leg because of one of Betsy's jokes, and yet Betsy's mom has no qualms about continuing to hire Claudia's friends even though this child is apparently completely unrepentant about her role in breaking her last babysitter's leg! And the kid keeps pranking people! If I was that kid's mom I probably wouldn't even let her out of my sight, but I CERTAINLY would have confiscated all her joke stuff by now--invisible ink, fake bugs, and trick glasses, all of it. I also thought it was kinda screwy that the way the babysitters decided to teach Betsy a lesson was to do a prank on HER so she'd know how it feels. If she kept blithely pranking people after hurting someone so she had to go to the hospital, you wouldn't think this "taste of your own medicine" thing would be particularly effective!

Also, it kinda felt like the broken-leg experience for Claudia was solidly less than realistic, and she was super worried about whether babysitting might be dangerous and cause her to have an injury that would limit her ability to do her art. Which I think is silly because ANYTHING you do in your life could lead to an accident; the most she should really be worrying about here is whether she should ever sit for Betsy again. (I wouldn't.) But of course the book wouldn't have been complete without some kind of personal crisis that led to wondering whether she would quit the Baby-Sitters Club, which seems to happen about every other book.

In "Claudia and the Bad Joke," baby-sitter Claudia Kishi clashes with known prankster, eight-year-old Betsy Sobak, and comes out on the losing end. Betsy deliberately lets Claudia use a broken swing, and Claudia winds up with a severely broken leg, a long stay in the hospital, and weeks out of school.

Instead of learning her lesson about playing practical jokes, Betsy continues to trick both her sitters and her classmates. While the injured Claudia considers dropping out of the Baby-Sitters Club for good, the other sitters conspire to out-prank Betsy, and convince her to give up her practical jokes forever.

In general, the characters in the Baby-Sitters Club series are responsible and capable young business women, and they are good role models for young girls. However, I was disappointed in the message this story sent. Instead of trying to deal with their problem in a mature way, the club members get down on the same level as their eight-year-old antagonist. The sitters use sneezing powder, fake rats and spiders, a phony fainting, and, ultimately, public embarrassment in a movie theater to put Betsy in her place.

One thing I like about the Baby-Sitters Club books is that the characters are not perfect - they are still children who learn and mature in each book. In this one, Claudia does learn a lesson about perseverance, and she continues her role in the club despite her bad baby-sitting experience. However, I was disappointed that there's no realization at the end of the story that the girls' behavior towards Betsy was juvenile, unprofessional, and inappropriate. Despite that, the book is a fun read, and girls in the eight to twelve age range will likely enjoy it.

ISBN 0590415832 - In every BSC book I've read so far, Martin has always tended to write the main story with a secondary story that runs somewhat parallel and ties in at the end. This book doesn't seem to have that secondary story, which was too bad - I thought there were several chances for it, especially with Cathy, Claudia's hospital roommate. It didn't detract from the story, though.

When a call comes in to the BSC from a new client, the girls voice some suspicion - the Sobak's live in an area where people usually use other sitters - so Claudia, who has taken the job, asks around. Told by other sitters that Betsy's a handful, and a practical joker, Claudia believes she's prepared. She has no idea! A practical joke goes badly and Claudia ends up with a badly broken leg.

Missing a lot of school is not a good thing for a student like Claudia, who has to work hard just to keep up. With little to do, Claudia's mind dwells on her accident and she begins to wonder if babysitting is too dangerous. What if she had broken her arm or hand and couldn't do her art anymore? Prepared to quit the BSC if necessary, Claudia turns to her grandmother Mimi, who believes that her fear is really of not being in control.

The girls set out to teach Betsy that practical jokes are not always funny - and they go a few rounds with the girl before she finally gets it. Betsy does learn, and Claudia does heal but will Claudia really quit the BSC?

The practical jokes battles were amusing, and it was good that the girls were aware that they probably shouldn't be engaging Betsy in them. It was also nice that Stacey hasn't been forgotten. Martin always seems to do a very good job with those details.

Another terrific installment from the early years of this great series. This is before Maryann's dad married Dawn's mom. The writing is top notch and it moves pretty fast. Much from Mimi, Claudia's beloved grandmother. I have found that if you take a break from this series for awhile, it's great to come back to. Looking forward to Stacey and The Mall Mystery.
