Rolling Flipper
I wish I'd paid more attention when ordering this book to add to the collection of The Railway Series books we have for our grandson. We wanted the old fashioned-feeling, smaller-sized (@ 4 1/2"h x 5 3/4"w) book similar to our others - which is perfect for smaller hands - with its number on the side. This one is an @ 5'h, 6 1/2"w book without a number on the side, and despite the old-fashioned illustrations, it just doesn't have the same "feel" as our other books. It was originally published in 1957... first published in this edition in 1999 by Egmont. Eventually we'll want to hunt down the version we actually want, but this'll do for now.

We do enjoy the book itself, though - Thomas, Henry, Gordon, James Percy, Toby, Duck, Sir Topham Hatt, along with the newly introduced Foreign Engine, Jinty and Pug, and other previously met friends come together in the four stories included within the book: Percy takes the Plunge / Gordon goes Foreign / Double Header / The Fat Controller's Engines. We like the way the Rev. Awdry always sets the stage with his forward... "Dear Friends, The Fat Controller's engines are now quite famous. They have been on the Wireless, and had many other adventures. But he had another plan too for his engines, and this book will tell you what it was. The Author". Our older grandson was about 2 1/2 when he became completely infatuated with Thomas, which led Grandpa and I to beginning our first collections for him... trains, annuals, but - first and foremost - The Railway Series!

There are 42 books in the series, the first 26 written by the Rev. W. Awdry, with the remaining 16 written by his son, Christopher (for whom the books were begun in the first place!) Our older grandson (almost 6 now) still enjoys his collections, but his younger brother (closing in on 2) is already showing strong interest - with another grandchild due in September, the Thomas collections have been a great investment for us.

If you're not looking to start a collection, read no further, but if you think you'd like to, we'll save you the trouble of looking up all of the titles - I've listed them in the "comments" below.
