Adkins addresses nautical vocabulary, the physics of how sails work, basic . The best and most vbeautifully illustrated primer on the subject of sailing. I've given this book as a gift many times to anyone thinking of getting into the sport.

Adkins addresses nautical vocabulary, the physics of how sails work, basic sailing technique and important ancillary skills like knots, navigation, and understanding weather. It left me with two desires: to go sailing as soon as possible, and to give copies of this book to my friends and relatives. Not strictly speaking a children's book, as it's a little wordy for unsteady readers - but suitable for confident readers age 8 or 10ish through adult.

Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required.

Jan Adkin's book shows a gift for teaching as well as illustration, and his style is literate, rather pedagogical. Because I am new to sailing, I brougt home many books from the library that I hoped would be helpful. The Craft of Sail was better than any of the others. An excellent conceptual approach that cuts to the chase. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 20 years ago. Adkins begins where he ought to, with the underlying basic principles of how sails work. After that, details that might otherwise be confusing or a mere memorization chore fall into place and make sense.

Classic American Sailing Craft, Camden, Maine. A few of the remarkable facts about this schooner is that unlike many other commercial sailing vessels she was never converted to operate as a motor vessel, and since she was launched she has never missed a working season, even while undergoing a two-phase total restoration in the early 1980's during consecutive winters!

Inside of book was good condition. Due to food stain, tape residue on hardback cover and torn paper cover......, I cannot give as the gift intended.

I'm writing this review at anchor in a small cove a few miles south of Boston harbor. I've been a full time cruiser and liveaboard for three years now, and I owe all the sailing I've done, things I've seen, and places I've gone to Mr Adkins and his wonderful book. Like many others, I first found this book by chance in the local library when I was in elementary school. I kept the book all through the year and eventually got my own copy, followed by several small sailboats from 12ft to 26ft before finally acquiring a 50ft heavy keel ketch cruiser. This book isn't just a wealth of knowledge with pages full of beautiful nautical artwork, it's a fundamental source of inspiration for dreams and adventure.

A very well done, simple to understand, text of
the concepts and principles behind sailing.
Any would-be-sailer in the entire family would
enjoy this book.

This is the most direct and unencombering books I've read on sailing in over 60 years of the sport. I've used it for teaching professionally and leisurely. As a Sailing Yacht Broker I gave it as a gift to clients. It gives what you need and no more all in 62 pages!
