Love this series of books. I have been reading them to my children and now grandchildren since 1978. I look forward to completing my collection. by the way, why is the one on Jacques Cousteau so darned pricey?

Lovely childrens tale of a fascinating woman and what she overcame to succeed at what she felt was her goal in life. It was well written, as are all the VALUE TALE series books and gave some interesting facts about her life and her legacy at the end. Would strongly recommend for any age!

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Ann Donegan Johnson recognizes the optimism of Amelia Earhart (1897-1936).

The book introduces a very active young girl named Amelia, who liked to run, play and explore. She couldn't wait to try each new thing, sure that it would be an enjoyable adventure. When she was older, Amelia worked as a nurse's aide in a hospital for soldiers. Her positive attitude helped many patients avoid discouragement and get better. After becoming a pilot, Amelia flew many new--and sometimes dangerous--airplanes. She is remembered for her courage and optimism.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Earhart's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Modern air travel would never have gotten off the ground without brave optimists like Amelia Earhart. Her courage inspired many dreamers to believe the seemingly impossible is possible, if you believe in yourself and try your best." (p. 62)
