The first 'dark and stormy night' was conjured up by the English Victorian novelist, playwright and politician who rejoiced in the name of Sir Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton. It has become synonymous with the Victorian melodramatic style, of which Bulwer-Lytton's many works provide numerous examples. This style has long been out of fashion and considered kitsch and risible. The phrase has been used frequently as a comic device by Charles M. Schulz in the popular comic strip Peanuts. Bulwer-Lytton's literary efforts weren't entirely in vain.

My only problem with it, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars, was that the invoice sticker was placed in the middle on the front of the book jacket, making it impossible to get off. I tried, everything, but because of how it was stuck or the type of glue, it caused part of the book jacket to come off too, ruining the book jacket.

Snoopy is the Ernest Hemingway of Beagles.

This will make you think; it will make you laugh and it will make you cry.

Well, not really, but it will make you all warm and fuzzy inside and that is more than enough.

This book made me laugh as a kid. Its so simple and yet really made me think. Its my favorite Charles Schulz book. Snoopy is an author and a pirate. What could be better?! I read it to one of my young little friends and he laughed and was delighted by this book in the same way that I was.

Short & sweet--but fun to see Snoopy actually did finish his novel. This is a great trip down memory lane.

Another fine 'Peanuts' anthology, but not what I was looking for.

My wife teaches grad students how to write & research publishable articles and BOOKS. To liven her handouts we have been collecting the "Dark & Stormy Night" cartoons from the daily Classic Charlie Brown in our local paper, The News & Observor.

Then I found this title on Amazon and ordered it for its Cover since the daily strips are in B&W; despite another reviewer's comment that it only had a couple of Snoopy writes a book strips. That Reviewer was WRONG!

This book has two 3-layer Sunday strips plus 10 single layer daily strips; in other words a bargain to assemble a fair use collage for the 20+ I had already "fair used" from the current N&O for a "Snoopy et al write books" compendium.

In other words, Duggan's Law of Scholarly Research applies to the previous reviewer.

Definitely a Five-Star Item for the 1994-95 Charles M. Schultz affectionado.
