During the Great War on Cybertron, one of the Autobots’ fallen heroes was Optimus Prime's best friend — Ironhide. Now, with Cybertron and Ironhide both fallen, their fates become intertwined in unexpected ways. Ironhide presents the tale of a hero's return that may bring new hope to Cybertron.

While the concept and plot is interesting, that promise and potential quickly fizzes out. Rather than pacing out the elements of mystery and the great challenge before Ironhide, we are teased with these interesting plot points only to have them rushed through at a pace so fast they hardly seemed to be a challenge in the first place. Was it the writing or the fact that the series was limited to 4 issues? Who knows, it just didn't work as well as it could have. With that being said, I did enjoy the premise as well as some of the better Transformers art out there today. While not one of the best stories out there, it was an enjoyable read...and that counts for a lot, IMO. Enjoyed the design of Alpha Trion in spite of his odd characterization, other than him, everyone seemed to be portrayed in a classic sense, which i enjoyed. As the title says, worth checking out.

If you've read the series of books that started with For All Mankind, then this is for you. It gives an explanation of a few things from that series. Plus, if you like Ironhide, then you'll love this book.

Excellent

Was hoping that this would have a little "more" something to it. It was kind of boring. Loved the Ironhide character as a kid and was not thrilled with Michael Bay ruined him in the movies.

I think they could have done a lot more with this story.

Wait, didn't Ironhide just die in battle (rather heroically I might add)?

If you've seen Battlestar Galactica, and the resurrecting Cylons, it'll all
make sense. His spark (or spirit) is reborn in a rather swanky new body by
Alpha Trion, the last autobot remaining on Cybertron. How his spark traveled
there is a mystery - only Primus knows.

I won't spoil the ending, but it reveals the mystery of a rather large and popular
Transformer, who with Alpha Trion leaves Ironhide and Cybertron on a rather sneaky
'secret squirrel' mission. Ironhide is alone, and must fight off hordes of Insecticons
swarms, cleaning the world for the eventual return, someday, of the Autobots.
Its a good, but confusing read, and answers as many questions as it introduces.

I've been reading through the IDW Transformer universe since it started... from the slow start with Infiltration, to the whole "All Hail Megatron" hoo ha, I've pretty much read almost everything to date (with the exception of Blasters' Spotlight, the Drift mini and International Incident).
So I am pretty well up to date with IDW Transformers, with a few exceptions.
Now for this one (be warned, some minor spoilers):
The story is focused mainly on Ironhide (as the title suggests). As we fans may recall, Ironhide was killed in "For All Mankind". However, the character gets brought back from the dead. His return is mostly explained, but seems a little glitchy to me. No matter. He wakes up on present day Cybertron, which is nearly uninhabitable to the Transformers. The story mostly focuses on the here-and-now, but interweaves with his memories from before the Autobots' departure from Cybertron.
He also has no memories after that, having forgotten everything involving Earth. But he's still the same old Ironhide.
I thought the flashback scenes were nice (although I got confused a bit by one, which even shows a minor character who I could have sworn was dead in his his half blown up state actually talking). We get to see a little more of his interaction with Optimus Prime, and a bit more about his pre-Autobot days.
I for the most part liked his present day story, but I feel like too much importance is being placed on Ironhide. It feels like the character is being treated as tougher and more powerful than he is. Also, a few more threads from previous Spotlights are thrown in (well, one Spotlight, one mini "All Hail Megatron" story), not to mentioned another significant Transformer character who has previously not materialized in the IDW 'verse until now.
For the most part, I enjoyed this one. More than "For All Mankind", and even more than "Last Stand of the Wreckers", with my biggest complaint of those latter two being that it didn't feature enough A-lister Transformer characters for my taste (I did get a bit bored with some of the lesser known Wreckers, and not even being moved too much when they got killed). And had this book been about some more obscure character, say, Double Dealer or Hard Head, I would have lost interest. But this is Ironhide. If he doesn't rank up there with my top ten favorite Transformer characters, then he's definitely in my top twenty.

Upon my first reading I thought this series was rushed and light on plot. But as I came to think about it over the next month, I found I couldn't get it out of my head. Mike Costa takes the character of Iron Hide and strips him down to his core. By erasing his memories of all his tragedies and triumphs, he gets a fresh start. But he can't seem to outrun what he was meant for, to kill and to die. By stories end he has to come to grips with his fate and his place in the world. If freedom is the right of all sentient beings, then where does that leave someone who can't seem to be anything rather than what he has apparently been destined to be? A cerebral story that is worth your time and energy if you are willing to give it some thought.

I was very confused coming into this story as Ironhide was dead so I didn't know where this story was going to go. After reading it I'm still not sure where or why this story is going anywhere. Alpha Trion looks cool & talks in his usual cyptic way. Ironhide comes across really well but why he was needed back & the attempt to give him a fresh start seems stupid to me. The last chapter just turns into a shoot 'em up. After the start of the book I would've hoped for more.
