Robert Blake writes with a cool detachment about Rhodesia, at the time (the 1970s) a controversial rouge state. He starts the history with the African tribes and their only partially understood movements prior to white contact and then he moves into the Pioneer Column and the empire building Cecil Rhodes. He describes the romantic pioneer days with an excellent flair, but his focus isn't on the covered wagons and rifle holding settlers.

A History of Rhodesia is a well written book that provides a thorough acccount of (southern) Rhodesia's history.

Blake artistically focused upon the European history of the former colony from the 1890s until the early 1960s. He briefly covers the UDI period of Rhodesia, but his best writing recounts the political events that defined Rhodesia before 1965. Blake beautifully articulated the political history of Rhodesia, but perhaps, like other liberals, he missed the major point. A History of Rhodesia is a well written book that provides a thorough acccount of (southern) Rhodesia's history. I recommend this book to those interested in detailed southern African history.

A renowned Oxford historian, drawing on ten years of research, details the economic, political, ideological, and external forces that have shaped the history of the troubled African country from 5000 B.C. to 1977.

Instead it is the halls of power, in London, Cape Colony, and eventually Salisbury.

He ably describes the problems that Rhodesia faced. These problems eventually overcame the nation. The problems, as this reviewer interprets it are thus:

1. Rhodesian culture was formed during the heyday of the British Empire. This gave the culture a particular stamp which didn't help it adapt to changing circumstances. To compare United States was formed in the culture of the English Civil War.

2. Unlike the US, Canada, Australia, and western South Africa the natives didn't disappear due to drink and plague. Instead they grew, the White population-as fast and exceptional as it's growth was-couldn't keep up.

3. The Rhodesian whites, and their white allies abroad had a difficult time handling the racial issue due to Christianity. Protestant ministers such as Rev. Arthur Shirley Cripps worked to organize blacks, preach a gospel proclaiming White sin, and generally made the position of White rule impossible to theologically maintain.

4. The Rhodesians, and the Afrikaners were never, ever able to truly cooperate or trust each other, and poor decisions were made by both White African tribes based on that enmity.

5. The Federation of Central Africa was an ill-advised colonial re-organization effort that helped spark the African resistance to Rhodesia.

In short this book is an excellent public policy level view of Rhodesia's rise and fall. A very well written book that explains very complex ideas in a very easy way.

...Most books about Rhodesia were either written in Rhodesia while it existed or by extreme opponents calling for its destruction. Lord Blake's book is neither (it was written several years before Rhodesia fell.)
...
...While many Rhodesians might have arguments with some of his points, he had a more complete view of the situation than many in the British government. Unlike many ignorant writers (or those with an axe to grind) he understood the difference between Rhodesia's policies (which he likens to the British Raj in India) and that of South Africa with its heavy handed fascist overtones...
...
...I have been to both South Africa and to Rhodesia (1976-78) and indeed there was a world of difference. Rhodesia was working towards change... and quickly... but it got a late start...
...
...At the time it was obvious that if a marxist faction took power that whatever "guarantees" they might give the British... that it would decay into the nightmare that is now Mugabe...
...

...Lord Blake could see many problems... but not that one. He was opposed to Rhodesia, but he was not a marxist or given to lying. I reccomend this history.

An absorbing look at the history and sordid politics of the late, great Rhodesia. The book ends in 1978, at the brink of Zimbabwe, but the author posits what an historian in the year 2000 will look back upon. Very prophetic. I came away from this deep book with a renewed appreciation for P.M. Ian Smith in spite of the author's apparent dislike for the man. In hindsight, the U.K. was more of a hindrance than a help and can share in what the nation has become.

Уou ll never walk alone
To say this book is dry and dull is an understatement. There is a ton of information presented, which would otherwise be fairly exciting to read about, but the author presents it in a certainly British manner that is cold and most uninteresting. I got halfway through and quickly lost interest. Leafing through the remainder let me know that I did not miss much.

Between this work and Peter Godwin's "Rhodesians Never Die," one can ultimately capture both the history and sociology of one of the most interesting countries of the 20th Century. Here, Blake does a great job of capturing the reasons behind the federation, UDI, and the beginning of negotiations. Blake can be tedious and, at times, condescending (his points on Rhodesian dining are laugh-out-loud funny). However, the work is worthwhile to understanding how Zimbabwe has evolved.
