Told with humor and a soupçon of familiarity with the area, Dr. Parker follows the early explorers, the miners and the soldiers into the rip-roaring towns of Hill City, Custer, Deadwood and Lead. Although some of the info is now out of date (the Homestake is no longer in operation for example), and the book has a few typos, it is still worth reading for the background and Dr. Parker's wry anecdotes. Well footnoted, with an extensive bibliography. Recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyable writing style while at the same time providing excellent historical context. No wonder Watson Parker is known as the dean of Black Hills history!

Watson Parker's reprinted book is an example of how precise scholarship and attention to fine detail cam make a non-fiction book not only an outstanding read, but also an indespensable resource for other writers who are doing research on the Black Hills. I found that his descriptions of the very early history and discoveries of gold in the Hills gave me a vision of the setting prior to the eventual rape of the hills by the miners and made it more understandable why the Sioux regarded the Paha Sapa as a spiritual site to be protected at all costs. Parker's later chapters which describe: the early trials of miners and settlers entering hostile Sioux territory, the actual different processes of removing gold using panning, sluicing, rockers and mercury, and the influx of freighters, stage lines and businesses shows how the Black Hills was changed almost overnight from a tranquil place of Indian spiritual worship into a bustling, noisy, stinky mining town where law and order were in short supply for the first few years. His final chapters describing the bad guys and the transition into hard rock mining and the development of giant stamp mills rounds out the complete picture of this historic mining area. I found it extremely useful in writing the section of my own book, "Rough Enough", which includes Richard Clow's discovery of the Golden Seal Lode on one of the ridges between Deadwood and Lead. Parker's work should not be missed out of your reading if you want to know what went on in the Hills from 1803 through 1880.
