Introduction by Brian C. Pohanka, 65 b/w photos 22 drawings 10 maps 7 x 10 "The Custer Myth is truly a source book. Students of the Indian Wars will be forever indebted to Colonel Graham for his compilation and to Fred Dustin for his comprehensive bibliography." -The New York Times Immediately after news of the disaster at Little Bighorn spread across the nation in June of 1876, editors, artists, and writers made George A. Custer into the battle's tragic hero. The laudatory biographies that followed and his widow's desperate attempts to preserve her late husband's heroic memory soon elevated his reputation to mythic proportions. But historian and lawyer W. A. Graham (1875-1954) was not interested in the propaganda surrounding the Custer myth. In 1953 Stackpole first published William A. Graham's The Custer Myth, a much-needed reference work that presents original source material without the bias of interpretations and misconstructions. Now available in paperback, this classic study will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for every Custer researcher, student, and enthusiast.

THIS BOOK IS NOT A GORE VIDAL FANTASY.

ONCE READ YOU WILL NOT PASS IT ON.

BUT, IF IN HARD TIMES, YOU DO LET GO, YOU CAN ALWAYS GET YOUR MONEY BACK BY SELLING IT ON LINE AS THE PRICE HAS GONE UP FOR EVEN RATTY COPIES TO DOUBLE 1970 NEW.

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BOOKS YOU WILL ACTUALLY FINISH READING.

THE BOOK IS ABOUT THE PROSCECUTION OF THE 1876 "PUNISHMENT ORDER" GIVEN BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR TO ELIMINATE THE SIOUX WHO HAD LEFT THE RESERVATION.
THE IDEA WAS TO CHASE DOWN AND KILL A SMALL GROUP OF INDIANS.

AS IT TURNED OUT A COMBINED FORCE OF 5000 OR SO INDIAN MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN, WAS NOT "SMALL".

THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON THIS SUBJECT THAT TELLS THE STORY OF THE COMBATANTS FROM THEIR OWN WORDS. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THIS IS THE SOURCE. IT IS WRITTEN BY A MAN WHO WAS THERE MOSTLY FROM INTERVIEWS OF PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE ON THE INDIANS SIDE.

CAN YOU TRUST THE INDIANS BETWEEN 1876 AND 1900 TO SPEAK THE TRUTH?
SIMPLY TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THEY HAD TWO POSSIBLE MOTIVES TO NOT.

1. THE INDIANS FELT LIKE CRIMINALS BEING INTERROGATED
"I WAS NEVER THERE"
"I DID NOT DO IT"
"I DID NOT HEAR ABOUT IT UNTIL LATER.
NOTE:MEDICINE MAN,SITTING BULLS STATEMENT. "I WAS VERY SICK AT THE TIME".
DEFINE SICK,,, HE HAD JUST FINISHED THE "DANCE" READ ABOUT THE INDIANS WAY OF GETTING DEVINE SUPPORT AND GOOD FORTUNE.
(GHOST AND SUN DANCE (DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR RULED ILLEGAL)
THE "SUN DANCE" OF WHICH YOU HAVE TO SEE THE SCARS TO APPRECIATE IS BEYOND NORMAL HUMAN ENDURANCE. SEARCH ON BING "WHY THE INDIANS DID THE SUN DANCE"
THE MOVIE "A MAN CALLED HORSE" GIVES A VERY VIVID PICTURE OF THIS THAT SEEMS VERY ACCURATE.
"ETC".
2. THE INDIANS WERE BRAGGING ABOUT THE ONE BIG EVENT WHERE THEY CAME OUT ON TOP.
INDIAN SIDE 'GLORIOUS VICTORY'
ARMY SIDE 'MASSACRE'

EXAMPLE:
1890 WOUNDED KNEE EVENT WHERE THE ARMY KILLED OFF VILLAGE OF MOSTLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN. SURVIVORS INITIALLY RODE AWAY OR WERE "OUT OF TOWN" AT THE TIME.
DO NOT FOR ONE SECOND THINK THE WOMEN WERE INNOCENT AS LIFE AS AN INDIAN WOMAN WAS ONE OF SURVIVAL. ISLAMIC WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BETTER OFF EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SIMPLY SLAVES WITH A DIFFERENT NAME. FOR ARGUMENT, CHECK ISLAMIC HISTORY SIX HUNDRED YEARS AGO REGARDING HOW WOMEN WERE OBTAINED AND USED UP. OUTLINE "THE BOOK".
KNOW THAT SIOUX BOYS AT AGE NINE WERE GIVEN THE CHOICE TO BECOME MEN, SLAVES, OR THE MARTYRS WHO DIED TRYING TO BECOME MEN.
FAILED MEN IF THEY WERE TO SURVIVE MUST BE ACCEPTED AS SLAVES OF THE WOMEN WITH NO RECOURSE LATER. FOR COMPARISON, A NUN WITH A FAT RULER WAS A PANSY. ACTUALLY THERE IS LITTLE COMPARISON.
SLAVES COULD BE TORTURED OR BEATEN TO DEATH FOR ANY REASON. PRISONERS WERE ALWAYS GIVEN TO THE WOMEN AS SLAVES OR TORTURE TOYS. THE WOMEN WERE VERY MOTIVATED AND VERY GOOD AT THIS.
KNOW ALSO THAT THIS IS THE SAME FOR BOYS AGE 9 ALL OVER THE PLANET GOING BACK FROM 1900 INTO ANTIQUITY.
READ ZULU RITE OF PASSAGE HISTORY.
NOTHING DIFFERENT.
COMPARE TO ANY OTHER POPULATION WHERE SURVIVAL WAS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH.
MY SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS GO BACK TO AGE 12 IN THE YEAR 1949. TIMES CHANGED FOR MORE SO CALLED CIVILIZED GROUPS OF PEOPLE.
ARMY SIDE GREAT 'VICTORY'
INDIANS SIDE 'MASSACRE'

THIS BOOK IS THE ONLY CHANCE YOU WILL EVER HAVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH AND WHAT THE ACTUAL COMBATANTS WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE.

A THOUSAND "ME TOO'S" CAN WRITE MILLIONS OF WORDS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY ONLY ACTUAL WITNESS STATEMENTS CAN BE CREDIBLE. TRUTHFUL OR NOT.

THE ARMY WAS THE INTERFACE BETWEEN TWO ENTITIES.
1.THE INDIAN POPULATION.
2.THE U.S. GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR.

THE ARMY COMMANDER:
GENERAL TERRY WHO WAS LATE IN ARRIVING
THE INDIAN COMMANDER:
THERE WERE MANY FROM A HALF DOZEN INDIAN NON COMPATIBLE NATIONS. EVEN THOSE WHO DID NOT USUALLY "GET ALONG". IN THIS CASE THE INDIAN TRIBES WHO HAD MADE THE BEST CHOICE HAD A COMMON ENEMY.

THE DEFINITION OF PUNISHMENT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE INTERIOR/INDIAN CONFLICT WAS DEATH OF ALL CONCERNED PLUS THE DESTRUCTION OR CONFISCATION OF ASSETS.
DID THE INDIANS TAKE POSSESSION OF ARMY ASSETS?
ASK YOURSELF IF YOU WOULD BE CAUGHT WITH STOLEN ARMY ASSETS AT A TIME WHERE THE PENALTY WOULD BE SUMMARY EXECUTION.
ASK YOURSELF IF THE INDIANS WEAPONS, THE NEW HENRY REPEATING RIFLES, WERE BETTER THAN THE SLOW FIRE SINGLE SHOT SHARPS MILITARY ISSUE.
HENRY COLT AND WINCHESTER WANTED TO SELL RIFLES BUT THE ARMY WAS NOT BUYING.
READ THE ACCOUNT OF WHY THE INDIAN CHILDREN WERE PULLED FROM THE BATTLE WITH THEIR STRINGED WEAPONS. (CHILDREN UNDER OR AT THE AGE OF 9 YEARS)
WAS THIS BATTLE OVER IN SECONDS AS YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM A RATIO OF 50 TO 1 IN FAVOR OF THE INDIANS. I DON'T THINK SO, WHEN THE INDIANS COULD TAKE THEIR TIME IN THEIR PROSECUTION OF THE PUNISHMENT.
CUSTERS GROUP OF THE THREE ARMY ELEMENTS HE DIRECTED WAS TOTALLY BOXED IN. THE OTHER TWO FORMED A STAND OFF ON THEIR OWN ONCE THEY HAD ASSESSED THE SITUATION. THE COMMANDERS WERE LABLED COWARDS BY MANY FOR NOT CHARGING INTO THE ENCAMPMENT OF THOUSANDS OF TENTS.
THE INDIANS POINT OF VIEW IS UNDERSTANDABLE. MEDICINE MAN SITTING BULL SAID "I WAS MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS WHEN THIS STARTED AND DID NOT PARTICIPATE. CRAZY HORSE CLAIMED TO RIDE INTO THE BATTLE UNARMED. YOU MUST DECIDE BASED ON WHAT EVERY BODY HAD TO SAY AS A WHOLE.

I first bought this book in 1966 and it had been stolen in 1972.
It is unusual as it is a second party document. It is written by a man who was there who interviewed the people involved on the INDIANS SIDE. The author was down stream during the time Custer was killed. The interviews were unique in many ways but the most unusual was the permission given to a Sioux woman to speak. Sioux women were very strong individuals as was necessary to survive but there were many rules and very few methods of punishment.

The Sioux women were given the spoils of war. Slaves and toys. The women were unique in that if they lost their man they would not likely survive winter unless they could find another man to take them as wife. The women were given the wounded enemy combatants. No soldier would ever choose to be taken alive which explains why things happened the way they did.

THIS PARTICULAR COPY FROM AMAZON WAS BADLY RODENT CHEWED BUT STILL PLACED FOR SALE.
HOWEVER:
NOT HAVING A READABLE COPY IS NOT AN OPTION IF YOU KNOW THAT IT IS THE ONLY AUTHORITY OF WHAT HAPPENED AND WANT TO REMEMBER "HOW IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED".

ANY OTHER DOCUMENT REGARDING THIS EVENT THAT CLAIMS TO BE FIRST OR SECOND HAND IS LIES AND CONJECTURE. THERE WERE ONLY TWO GROUPS OF PEOPLE LEFT AFTER THE BATTLE TO TELL THE STORY THE SOLDIERS AND THE INDIANS. DIRECT COMMUNICATION FROM ONE OR THE OTHER IS THE ONLY CREDIBLE INFORMATION.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA PRESS HAS PUBLISHED MANY OTHER BOOKS OF MERIT SUCH AS "BLACK ELK SPEAKS". BLACK ELK NEVER SPOKE ENGLISH AND THE AUTHOR FIRST HAD TO FIND A QUALIFIED INTERPRETER AND THEN GET PERMISSION TO TAKE DOWN THE STORY OF FAILURE AS CONCEIVED BY THE SUBJECT BUT SIGNIFICANT IMPORTANCE NONE THE LESS.

ANY AUTHOR THAT WAS NOT LIVING DURING THE LIFETIME OF THE SUBJECT PERSON IS PRINTING CONJECTURE AND NOT FACTS UNLESS OF COURSE THEY WERE MAKING COPY OF THE DOCUMENTS OF AUTHORS WHO DID ACTUALLY INTERVIEW THE SUBJECTS.

EVERYTHING ELSE IS SIMPLY A STORY FROM THE MIND OF THE AUTHOR. NO DIRECT CONTACT GUARANTEES LITERALY LICENSE.

BUY AND READ THE BOOK.

Perhaps the best book I've read yet on Gen./Col. Custer, and I think I read Col. Graham's book thirty years ago. But the price was too good to pass up..

Unereel
Very good overview of the Custer years, including the debacle at the Little Big Horn. Replete with many first-hand accounts from both sides at that famous battle. So sorry the pictorial jacket wasn't available.

Hilarious Kangaroo
Custer mania has produced a seemingly endless cycle of books, movies, essays and speeches.

This is an early entry into the Custer Myth and contains many first hand accounts. Benteen's account is one of the best. It relies mostly on original sources and sometimes the language is a bit outdated and it mostly is about the soldiers side.

The seller was a "Solid 10." I had serious reservations about my purchase from an unknown seller in this manner. This book reached my home (3,000 mi. from seller) extremely fast. Initially, this made a very good impression on me. Secondly, the thorough and substantial packaging was just awesome! Very professionally done.
This book was extreme well written in great detail. In my opinion, this work was better written than "Son of the Morning Star (Connell) or "A Terrible Glory" (Donovan). Just outstanding in all categories.

Orevise

Kaghma
