Joseph Davis is one of the most remarkable men I have read about. His story of working in law...assisted in making MS a State, Agricultural giant, the impact of the civil war on him and his beloved Hurricane Plantation in Vicksburg..and his last days spent recovering from his war loses and trying to find a place to live...calling in loans he had made to friends and family. Joseph gave a Plantation to his brother but did not follow-up with the documents. He sold his Plantation to his black Plantation Manager and floods destroyed the estate...The Davis family, after Joseph's death, fought for payment in the courts for years and apparently the land ended up with Joseph's great grand daughter (born out of wedlock)...a remarkable story about a remarkable man. If there was ever a story calling out to be filmed...this is it.

Janet Sharp Hermann has done a magnificent job of portraying this giant of a man. It is a spellbound account of a time and a place now almost forgotten. Her scholarship and research talents are made plain by the way she brings out the nature of Joseph E. Davis and his relationship with his family and especially his servants. His forbearance and high-spirited way of coping with the adversity he faced over the destruction of his property during the Civil War and the after-years were inspiring.
