Mildred Anne Butler RA RWS (11 January 1858 – 11 October 1941) was an Irish artist, who worked in watercolour and oil of landscape, genre and animal subjects. Butler was born and spent most of her life in Kilmurry, Thomastown, County Kilkenny and was associated with the Newlyn School of painters. Mildred Anne's en plein air style is dominated by the theme of nature and reflects scenes of domesticity around the family home in Kilmurry.

Butler and Siporin are not interested in promoting the stereotypes of the West, but rather in bringing notice to the forgotten roles and gritty realities of women's lived experience. Her graceful prose style hints at the poetic and her personal involvent with her characters is such that you will know these women and feel their lives. Her style is engaging and personal. I recommend this book to women everywhere and to men who ought to think twice about showing women anything but admiration.

Judith Butler is known for her decades of work in philosophy, feminism and activism worldwide Collectives are formed through a realization of a common social condition and a social bond, one that recognizes that what is happening to one life, whether it is violence, debt or subjection to patriarchal authority, is also happening for others. And though they may happen in different ways, the patterns are there, and so also are the grounds for solidarity. Butler: The new book, The Force of Non-Violence, is concerned with women, for sure, but with all people who are considered to be more or less ungrievable.

Based on the successful lecture/performance that Anne Butler and Ona Siporin have been presenting throughout the Intermountain West for several years, this work brings their art, scholarship and wisdom to the printed page. Uncommon Common Women will broaden and enrich the general reader's understanding of women's lives during the western emigration era.The authors cast a wide net; they are not interested in promoting the stereotypes of the West - the schoolmarm and the dance hall girl - but rather in bringing to notice the forgotten roles and gritty realities of women's lived experience during what was often a brutally difficult time.

Ona Siporin has an uncommon knack for both storytelling and graceful language. Her graceful prose style hints at the poetic and her personal involvent with her characters is such that you will know these women and feel their lives. Her style is engaging and personal. I recommend this book to women everywhere and to men who ought to think twice about showing women anything but admiration.
