This book is an interesting and entertaining addition to my library. I have a couple criticisms but anyone reading this should know that they do not outweigh the value of this book. The first is that the author concentrated too much on the history of his home town, El Paso. In fact, at least one long chapter was a long and overly-detailed account of things that took place in El Paso even though it had very little to do with the subject of the book - shooters. Other chapters also seemed to emphasize people who lived in El Paso to the exclusion of others who lived in other parts of the West. The result of that brings up my second criticism: Because so much emphasis was on El Paso, the choice of gunmen was not the best. Although many were famous gunfighters who are obvious candidates for such a book, some were uninteresting and little known while some of the truly great gunfighters aren't mentioned at all, apparently because they weren't from the limited regions of the West covered in the book. This book is just as much a history of El Paso as it is a book about gunfighters and, in fact, about 1/3rd of the book should have been published separately as a history of El Paso.

An odd thing, and a small thing at that, is how the author, in a couple instances, says that a particular gunfighter was one of the most dangerous killers of the entire West but then the story he tells is of a man who hardly did anything at all to rate such a description. Sometimes the author contradicts himself in this way.

Lastly, some things claimed as facts in the book are questionable according to other sources but that's excusable because the historical facts are often blurred anyway. Also, the book was originally published in 1976 and subsequent research has uncovered new facts. For example, recent research indicates that the so-called Gunfight at the O.K. Corral did not happen exactly as the author states in this book although he makes it clear that the facts have always been in question and he certainly had no way of knowing what later research would reveal.

That said, I still enjoyed the book and I think anyone interested in the "Old West" will too.

This is a nice introduction to a variety of "shooters" from the old West. The subtitle is: "A Gallery of Notorious Gunmen from the American West." However, there are some anomalies here. Rancher John Chisum is included because he was associated with some of the "notorious gunmen," such as Billy the Kid. Maybe he should be included, but it is one curious selection for this volume.

There are tradeoffs with Leon Metz' approach--one gets a sense of a lot of gunmen, but each "chapter" is quite brief. I do believe that the approach works--I prefer greater coverage rather than greater depth, but I would understand if others thought the tradeoff too great.

To the point. Who is covered here? Certainly, some well known figures are discussed--Billy the Kid (including an interesting discussion as to what his real name actually was), Sam Bass, the James Brothers, the Daltons, Elfego Baca, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (do they really belong in this volume?), Pat Garrett, Buffalo Bill (not really a "shooter"), Wild Bill Hickock, Clay Allison (whose demise was violent--but not by bullets as so many other gunmen died), John Wesley Hardin, and the pair of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp.

There are also lesser known (at least to me) shooters.

A good read.

I just finished this book and I loved it! Not only does it keep interest, start to finish, but it is also exceptionally well-written. It delves into the lives and legends of various western figures, well-known and little-known.

Also, The book is filled with one-liner's almost fitting of a movie screenplay. For example, at one point, Doc Holliday is described as a man who balanced his time between "drilling holes in teeth and drilling holes in bodies". At another point, The James gang is described as entering Coffeyville, MO. A town with 4000 souls "saved, and otherwise". The book simply had me laughing at many points.

Most of all, the book put me on the path to wanting to learn more about the people at hand. It will spur your interest too. Read it!

This book is excellent. The writing style of the author is humorous and enlightening - he cuts the "bull" and gets to the truth. It's a book that can be read from front-to-back, or simple jump around chapter-to-chapter. Each chapter covers a particular outlaw or outlaw gang. I highly recommend anyone interested in the old west read this book. The author did a huge amount of research of each outlaw or outlaw gang before writing the book. A must read for everyone!

Considering that:

a) Almost every character profiled in this book has one (or dozens) of books written about;

b) A lot of theses characters have longer sketches in Wikipedia.

one can assume this book is highly outdated, have being written in 1976.

However, if you want to find a brief introduction to the most famous gunmen in Old West, this is indeed a fine place to start. The brief sketches are fairly accurate and the humour tha author sometimes uses is very good.

An enjoyable book for any Old West fan. I bought it to read while at the beach and it did not disappoint. Leon Metz covers a lot of people that you will have heard of, as well as many you haven't, but that are just as interesting.

"The Shooters" by Leon Claire Metz is a must-read for any fan of the Old West.
The author covers both the popular and relatively little-known gunman in a book that is informative and witty.
Some of the characters in this book are the ones you'd expect(Billy the Kid,the James gang,Wild Bill Hockok, the Daltons)then there are others that I knew very little about;Tom Smith,Dave Mather,John Larn.
Mr.Metz wrote a book that gives details about the lives of these gunman without making it boring.Great book!
This book was what I hoped it would be and I recommend it.
