I stumbled across the existence of this book by reading a blog post that I took from a Seattle Urban Sketchers page where someone mentioned finding this book at a garage sale. As I had visited and really enjoyed Seattle and Pike Market, I thought I'd try to find the book here on Amazon.

It is a fantastic book, not only for the wonderful sketches but for the market place stories that accompany the sketches. I felt as if I were visiting the Market all over again and gained a sense of its rich history and the life of the people whose lives centred around the market.

My Sketch Teacher saw it and loved it so I gave her my copy to keep at the studio and then re-ordered one for myself. It is a book that you can pick up again and again, seeing something new each time you look at it.

My earliest memories of the Market are from the early 80's. This book, although probably drawn as early as the late 50's and 60's (published in '68) still jangles all those memories with every page.
It is truly amazing the detail with which Steinbrueck depicts the entire Market - down to the prices on the items for sale, and subtle architectural details. The notes he adds are great.
So much has changed, yet so much is also the same. There are even sketches showing an aerial view of the area with major buildings labeled, as well as views looking up key streets leading into/away from the Market. You can see the old JCPenneys, and the Woolworths (which I just barely remember) as well as many many other points of interest for the native Seattle dweller. Wonderful, wonderful book - a TRUE TREASURE. Anyone who has lived here long enough to develop a soft spot for the Market, will surely be moved by this loving depiction of the Market.
One cool detail - V.S. has, in many cases, depicted rough renderings of people browsing at the stalls and draws them in as if they were transparent, ghostlike, so you can still see the details of the stalls, signs, etc behind them. It really gives the impression that people come and go, but the Market will endure through the ages as the HEART of Seattle.
At least we hope it always will!
