Once home to the famous Cyclone roller coaster, the world's largest outdoor salt water pool, and vinegar-soaked french fries, Palisades continues to live on in the hearts of millions of people. One of the most popular pageants, Little Miss America, debuted in 1961. Girls between the ages of five and ten were judged on the basis of beauty, charm, poise, and personality.

Palisades Amusement Park was a 38-acre amusement park located in Bergen County, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. In the book Palisades Amusement Park: A Century of Fond Memories, the author Vince Gargiulo writes that "In reality, the club allowed park officials to discriminate according to the color of the patron's skin". He cites an example in July 1946, where eight black and two white people entered the park together; the white people were allowed to purchase tickets while the black people were prohibited from doing so.

Palisades Amusement Park was a 30-acre amusement park located in Bergen County, New Jersey .

Palisades Amusement Park was a 30-acre amusement park located in Bergen County, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from New York City. It was located atop the New Jersey Palisades lying partly in Cliffside Park and partly in Fort Lee. The park operated from 1898 until 1971, remaining one of the most visited amusement parks in the country until the end of its existence. In reality, the club allowed park officials to discriminate according to the color of the patron’s skin. In July 1946, ten people, eight black and two white, visited the Park as a group.

In 1898, a rustic picnic ground on the New Jersey Palisades overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan began a transformation into one of the greatest amusement parks in the world. Its attractions over the course of nearly seventy-five years of operation reflected the popular culture of a changing nation: from the high-diving horses of the twenties to the rock 'n' roll shows of the fifties and sixties, along with perennial favorites like the fun house and the Tunnel of Love, the famous Cyclone  roller coaster, and the carousel. The Park was the place where many turn-of-the century dwellers saw their first flying machines, and it was the backlot for several early motion pictures.

With the cooperation of hundreds of residents, former employees, and executives of the Park, Vincent Gargiulo has provided a comprehensive history of Palisades Amusement Park. The Park's personnel included such notables as Arthur Godfrey and Buster Crabbe; W. C. Fields, Jean Harlow, Johnny Weismuller, and Jackie Coogan were among the many celebrity regulars. Top entertainers like Tony Bennett, Chubby Checker, Diana Ross & the Supremes, the Jackson Five, and Frankie Avalon performed for record crowds at its famed open-air theater. The Park inspired a hit song, Freddy Cannon's "Palisades Park,"  and it played host to numerous contests, such as the Diaper Derby and the Miss American Teen-Ager pageant. Every summer weekend thousands of visitors enjoyed "the world's largest salt-water pool," vinegar-soaked french fries, and the cacophony of sounds on the midways.

For the millions who visited the Park until it closed in 1971, this book is sure to bring back cherished memories. And for amusement park and roller coaster fans never lucky enough to have entered its colorful gates, it will re-create the thrills, laughter, and joy that was "Palisades."

Craptacular. Wow. I could have done better myself with scanned color images.

Let me digress by stating that I ordered the book to afford a glimpse at my childhood. What a letdown.

I wish I had ordered one of the used hardcover editions manufactured by the Rutgers Press. No doubt the pictures had higher resolution. No, I was sucked in by the new edition having additional pages of photographs. They are images generated by scanning on what appears to be the lowest possible resolution. And they are ALL black and white.

My newly printed paperback edition was printed in San Bernadino, CA on August 29, 2016. It was delivered to my home in Arizona two days later. Probably some discount copy shop that makes Office Depot appear luxe by comparison. This book was obviously a saved pc file and editions are printed to order.

I know the author needs to make some profit, but dude, really? I could have done better myself. Plus e-books have color images; a Kindle edition would be a better choice.

Don't waste your money on this book. I think I'm going to use the pages of my edition to wrap fish. That's about all it's good for; my aspirations of a nice coffee table book to share a segment of life in NJ are decimated. My advice is do a google search for park images. They supersede any included in this sad, pathetic book.

This is a good book for those of us who fondly remember Palisades Amusement Park.
Plenty of details about the origin and history of the park.
There are plenty of photos but unfortunately they don't reproduce well on the paper stock used for this book - this is the reason I only gave it 4 stars.
I passed many a summer day in the pool and at the park back in the 1960s and had a great time.
Saw the music shows they gave there too.
And nothing I ever ate since can compare to the french fries they served there!

This book would be a welcome trip down memory lane for anyone who knew and loved Palisades Amusement Park and the simpler times the park thrived in. A plainly written, honest account by a man whose life was indelibly imprinted by this magical place; the book contains loads of small black and white photos, many of which look like copies from newspapers, but most are fairly poor reproductions. The two lonely pages of color photos left me longing for more.

If you grew up in Northern New Jersey with fond memories of your times at the park; then by all means you will enjoy looking back through the pages of this book.

I grew up in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and I spent alot of time as a child with my family at Palisades Amusement Park. To me Palisades was the greatest amusement park to go to and I am saddened to this day to know that it is no longer in existance. It was such a fun place to go to and a great place to also see some of the greatest rock bands of the 1960's also as well as having great rides to ride on. This book is just wonderful and I give it a 5 star rating. It tells you the entire history of the park from when it opened until it closed. I learned alot of things about the park that I never knew from reading this book. It is a real must read for anyone who used to love going to Palisades Amusement Park for a day of fun. This place and book is a true part of New Jersey's history.

Reading this book brought me back to the 60's and a wonderful time in my life. The book is filled with history but it is, more importantly, chock full of the spirit of Palisades Park.

Palisades Park was like Christmas, New Years and a fun Birthday Party all rolled up into one. As a small child I visited the park with my parents where we shared good times like a family should, but as a teenager it became something even more special. I performed there with my rock band a couple of times, and felt like I had really "made it".

How can these feelings be expressed in a book? Mr. Gargiulo does it with intelligence and a child-like awe of this place, the first "magical kingdom".

The prose is wonderful as so are the amazing pictures.

If anyone wants to take a time machine and return to those magical days in Fort Lee, one has only to read this book!

Lot's of memories.
My mother took us to the salt water pool when we were babes during the summer months in the 60's.
We went to the Palisades often up until it closed. Was really sad at that time.
The book is good.
