Few people today, black or white, know about the incredible life of Cathy Williams. From her beginnings as a slave in Independence, Missouri, to her enlistment with Company A, 38th US Infantry, in November, 1866, the story of this remarkable woman deserves to finally be told. By disguising herself as a man and assuming the name William Cathay, Williams became a 'buffalo soldier', serving in one of the six black units formed following the Civil War. Her story tells us much about prevailing attitudes toward both race and gender in post-Civil War America.

Risky Strong Dromedary
To be perfectly honest, I had never heard of Cathy Williams before. She was never a major topic covered in any of my history classes so therefore I didn’t do much digging around. But since I’ve started reading many of Tucker’s books, I’ve become more interested in the topic and learning more about it. When I saw that he released this book, I knew I had to check it out.

Like his other books, Tucker doesn’t focus on the more obvious parts of history. He like to look at the topics that aren’t cover repeatedly in other books. This book was no different. Looking at Cathy Willams’s life, we can see a real warrior born in a time that was not the best for her people. Born as a slave and going to the only African American woman to serve as a Buffalo Soldier, Williams is a role model for women and people of color everywhere.

It seems that a book like this is still topical in today’s day and age. When there is so much talk of there needing to be more equality between the races and genders, Williams stands out as someone who broke down walls long before the cause became so vital to society. Many people can thank Williams for the strides she took way back in the 1800s.

Like all Tucker’s books, this book is recommended for anyone who is looking to take a deeper look into history and not just the simple, dry textbook explanations we get in school.

I was not aware of Cathy Williams until I heard gentleman who reenact the story of the Buffalo Soldiers. They shared some of her story but I wanted to know more. I found this book and it is excellent. It not only deals with Ms. William's life but also about the other women who posed as male soldiers. The author did a tremendous amount of research. This is a must read for any person who enjoys Women's Studies, Amercian History and/or the Civil war. her story would make an incredible movie!

Every one should read this book in order to know their history. I found it is so many people, even people of color never knew it was an African American the only female to service in the Buffalo Soldiers. This is why I'm the President/Founder of Cathy Williams Buffalo Soldier Regiment,Inc of Las Vegas ,to keep her legacy alive. The book is very good all our members has to read it so they will be able to tell the story.

I am thoroughly thrilled by the fact that there was a female Buffalo Soldier. I couldn't have been happier when I learned of this book.
I was not taught this in school and especially not anything about a Black woman.

I bought this book at the Fort Concho Tx Museum book shop. I always buy a book relative to the site or period of history when visiting historical museums and have a library full. This was the worst ever. I thought it was poorly written. The author seems more interested in reminding readers every page about the miserable plight of slavery and in particular, women slaves. I get that. But seriously. It is full of the authors "most likely", "probably", "could be" statements. If this were the only book you ever read about the Army of the West, or the Indian Wars you would think all the "white" soldiers lived a life of luxury while the black soldiers were given all the task of menial drudgery. Life was hard then for everybody. Everybody worked in poor conditions, ate poorly and worked hard.

As a previous reviewer said. Read the title, title and back cover and you know the story. The pages inside the covers are a waste of time.
