Knowing that this book is related to Auschwitz, the reader naturally expects the pages to be filled with pain & sorrow. But the book flows in a very different way, the writer does not talk in detail about the hardships she goes through or blames anyone. She just notes down the very ordinary day today events, as if talking to a near one, of course her beloved husband.
Hana Pravda trained in Leningrad in 1936 under Alexei Dikii. On her return to Prague she married her first husband, Alexander Munk who was a student activist. When the war broke out both were sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp and were subsequently transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp where they became separated. Pravda survived the camp and the subsequent January 1945 death march and recorded her experiences in a diary. She later found out that her husband had died. Retrieved 2010-10-24.

In the context of Hana’s life, the details of the diary come as a shock and this is part of the power of the book. Hana Pravda’s resilience was astonishing. Towards the end of 1944 the Nazis had sent her along with several hundred other women and girls from Auschwitz to the work camp in Birnbäumel, to dig trenches to stop Russian tanks. In January 1945 their captors realized that these measures were futile, and the camp was abandoned.
